Avengers Spotlight #27 Review by (August 9, 2022)

Review: A somewhat bittersweet episode for Hawkeye as, for all his heroism, superheroes are increasingly seen as a menace. The bulk of the story is taken up with overlong (Boomerang’s attack on Stark Enterprises) or pointless (Hawkeye’s visit to the doctor) segments, making the episode seem padded as these bit are also not really relevant to the larger “Acts of Vengeance” crossover either. So we’re left with a frantic fight and a sorrowful slap.

The second story is nice for its (mostly) all-female lineup and example of real teamwork but the art, coloring, and printing are quite shoddy, getting worse as the story progresses. The story deserved better.

Comments: Issue bannered “Acts of Vengeance.” Hawkeye was bitten by Mad-Dog in issue #22. Avengers Island sank in AVENGERS #311. Second story: Battles seen elsewhere include Thor vs. Juggernaut (THOR #411-412), Iron Man vs. Wrecker (IRON MAN #251), Captain America vs. Sub-Mariner (CAPTAIN AMERICA #365), Quasar vs. the Absorbing Man (QUASAR #5), and the West Coast Avengers vs the U-Foes (AVENGERS WEST COAST #53).

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers Spotlight #27 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Boomerang bursts through a wall into the offices at Stark Enterprises, demanding (on orders from his boss Justin Hammer) all surveillance tapes they have of the Ghost in action. He severs the alarm, and is told that doing so automatically summons Iron Man. Boomerang intimidates the staff, welcoming a bout with the Golden Avenger but a mystery man in white (spoiler: it’s Loki) suddenly appears through a shimmering wall to remind him that, even with allies, he has never beaten Iron Man. The mystery man suggests an easier Avenger to battle….

Mockingbird persuades Hawkeye to see a doctor about the bite he received from Mad-Dog but the hero balks, distrustful of doctors. A simple test reveals that he has a bladder infection and he is prescribed an antibiotic. Clint and Bobbie part outside and a short time later, Hawkeye is under attack from Boomerang and his multitude of trick boomerangs. The baddie starts hurling flamerangs, endangering bystanders and property. Hawkeye uses a trick arrow to gum up Boomerang’s jet-boots and tries to rescue the civilians. He fires a line to a woman trapped on an upper floor of a burning building and as he is carrying her down, Boomerang cuts his line and the two fall, only to be caught by firefighters. Hawkeye entangles his foe in a big net arrow for the police but the woman he rescued slaps his face, blaming Hawkeye for the disaster. He walks off. abashed….

Synopsis: Stingray searches the bottom of the Hudson River for the recently sunk Hydrobase and Avengers Mansion, looking to see what can be salvaged. He discovers that the room where giant robots have been kept in stasis is now empty—and then he is hit from behind….

At a pier above, several female Avengers are moving material that has already been recovered when a distress call comes from Stingray. Firebird dives under the water to investigate and she is almost immediately hurled back to the pier. The Mad Thinker’s Awesome Android is active, having mimicked Stingray’s underwater armor. Not thinking, Black Widow fires one of her Widow’s Bites at it and it immediately fires a larger one back. She calls for assistance but most of the Avengers are tied up with battles of their own. Only Monica Rambeau, Captain Marvel, is available to come. Hellcat, Moondragon, and Firebird each try an attack but they all fail—and the latter accidentally gives the Android her fire powers. Captain Marvel arrives and salvages a stasis field projector, which, powered by Firebird, shuts the Android down. But they are concerned about the robots that are still missing and why Monica was the only Avenger available to answer the distress call….
