Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #4 Review by (September 7, 2022)

Review: Very talky issue tries to outline what Captain America and the shield stand for but it mostly gets bogged down in political chatter. There is no consensus but the final lesson seems to be, “You can choose your future.” A bit optimistic considering the Cap series have been rather critical of the USA and the status quo going back to the Nick Spencer runs so we’ll have to see whether the new writers believe that is even possible. The double-page spread showing Cap dueling acrobatically with Starpoint was rather nice. And Bucky was a pawn of the bad guys while being a pawn of the Soviets because multiple bad guy organizations furthering their goals without bumping into each other is the reality now.

Comments: Written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly. Steve Rogers says that Sam Wilson is his favorite Captain America.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #4 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Captain America (Steve Rogers), pondering the Outer Circle, goes to his pal Winter Soldier who is struggling with guilt over his role as a Starpoint, an assassin for the Outer Circle. Steve assures Bucky he’s not alone. They come up with a plan….

Steve walks Amari to school, telling him that violence isn’t a tool but a cycle. And his future is what he wants to make it….

In art class, the students are drawing Cap’s shield and its symbolism comes up; Steve is asked what the shield means to him….

Steve goes to the Overruled Pub, a hangout for those who feel they’ve been stepped on by the System and talks to old socialist Arlo Wright who talks about the little guy standing up to the System. He knows Cap will do the right thing….

That night, Steve goes out to the dumpster in the alley; he addresses the invisible Starpoint that has been stalking him. Steve reveals that he has known Starpoint was following him all day and was waiting to find him alone which Steve takes to mean the assassin doesn’t want to hurt anyone else. After some acrobatic dueling, Steve also reveals that what he has said that day was intended to be heard by Starpoint. He was covertly telling Starpoint that he doesn’t have to be a pawn of the Outer Circle, that he can control his own future. After some thought, Starpoint stops fighting and decides to join Cap….

When Starpoint goes offline, the Outer Circle member called the Revolution convenes a meeting of the council for a final move….
