Story Name:

Doom’s Shadow Part 3

Synopsis

Captain America (2025 series) #8 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

General Thunderbolt Ross visits the White House to see the President but Secretary of State Brooke intercepts him. Ross insists that the US conquer Latveria now for security and imperialist reasons. Brooke points out that Doctor Doom’s kidnapping of the General has made it far too personal so he is being reassigned. Ross is angry….

In Latveria, Alina Von Doom takes Captain America to a secret hideout in a tunnel for a talk. She explains that she doesn’t use her last name because it would scare too many people (Victor was her cousin). Cap warns her that she could be killed but she is not concerned; she is a pacifist because there are warriors like Cap to keep her safe….

Meanwhile, the SHIELD team (Trevor Tambling, Joe Ramos, Charles Castlemore, and the Red Widow) are investigating the farm where weapons are said to be stored. The place does have ICBMs but no sign of any nuclear materials there. Castlemore tells Red Widow that her combat moves are a thing of beauty; she doesn’t agree because of the lifetime of torture she endured to reach that level of proficiency but she in turn compliments Castlemore’s taking down the sniper (last issue). The agents report to Cap but find all signals blocked….

Then Cap discovers the real reason for this meeting: he is introduced to Mara and Melor Sandu of the Latverian Liberators who Cap calls murderers so that they hold him off at gunpoint. Alina is certain that the Sandus are also fighting for a free Latveria and so have joined forces against Salvation and his True Latveria party. They tell Cap that Salvation has nuclear weapons and they have learned that there exists a list of where they are hidden. The Sandus offer to help Cap find that list if he agrees to take those weapons away from Salvation before they kill him….

General Ross gathers a small team of loyalists, ready to follow his plan to defeat Lateveria, which involves studying the Hulk….

The SHIELD team reports to Nick Fury and they all learn that Cap is not with either group. They arrange to meet at the Embassy. Meanwhile, Salvation is watching, planning to kill them all once they locate Doom’s weapon….

Cap and the Sandus approach the enemy camp and sneak in, Cap preventing them from killing the guards. They are caught and there is an exchange of gunfire. An explosion hurls Cap several yards and he recovers and realizes he is in a mass grave. The Sandus inform Cap that it wasn’t a list of weapons they were after but a list of the dead so they could inform the families. The location of the grave was a surprise to them too. Cap calls it in to Fury, certain that Salvation is responsible and vowing to go after him….

Captain America (2025 series) #8 Review by (March 18, 2026)

Review: So far this story arc has been about Captain America entering a foreign country on a very realistic mission and discovering he doesn’t know what’s going on. And I’m afraid that it’s going to turn out Cap is being duped by the Sandus into going after Salvation. Note on the final page that Cap doesn’t want to wait for forensic teams to uncover the killer, he is certain and he vows revenge. I don’t like Cap being either a hothead or a dupe but if Cap herein represents the USA going into foreign conflicts he doesn’t fully understand, it’s only too appropriate. I’m starting to recall the horrible John Ney Rieber/Chuck Austin series from the early 00s where it felt like the Cap writers hated America and everything it stood for. We haven’t reached that point yet though Ross is clearly a stand-in for Donald Trump (Trump’s war in Iran is in its third week as this issue was published); I sounded the warning about the comic being a platform for the writer’s political views in my review of issue #3 so here it is again.

But the big problem is just that the comic is dull, with Cap trying to understand what’s going on, a task shared by the reader. So far it’s mainly people telling Cap what they stand for and a token action scene. Others may be impressed by the realism, I’m not. When does Cap get to punch the Red Skull again?

Comments: General Ross was captive of Doctor Doom in RED HULK (2025).
