She's Alive

Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #182 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

Matt Murdock awakens with a start, trying to convince himself that Elektra could be alive. Though he initially reminds himself that she died in his arms, his denial takes over and he starts to reason that the Hand could have taught Elektra methods of forestalling, or even faking, death. He suits up as Daredevil and heads out into the night to find answers, and possibly Elektra herself! Meanwhile, at Ryker’s Island Penitentiary, the Punisher is attacked in the showers by three men. He quickly and easily kills them all. We then cut to sometime later, as the Punisher is working out in his cell. He’s approached by a member of an unspecified agency who tells him about a large narcotics shipment going on in New York the following night. He’s been instructed by his superiors to do nothing about this but reasons that the Punisher could covertly handle it, and plans to break him out of prison for that purpose.

Elsewhere, Heather Glenn is shown a new document by her board of directors to better maximize their assets. She doesn’t really understand all of the details and asks if she can show it to Matt before she approves anything. All the while, her board secretly plans to take Glenn Industries for themselves. Meanwhile, Daredevil beats up some guys in a bar, who tell him that the Kingpin is planning a summit for the other big mob bosses. Matt heads to his office and has Becky go over the coroner’s report on Elektra, looking for anything to suggest she could be alive. Becky is astonished but Matt convinces himself that it could have been the wrong body. Heather stops by and Matt rather rudely brushes her off, demanding that Becky continue with her detailing of the report. Heather storms out just as Foggy is arriving with a prospective client, but Heather’s anger and Matt’s graphic questions about Elektra’s corpse scare the client off. Foggy angrily asks Matt if he’s lost his mind, and a silence falls. All Matt can muster is a quiet, “I don’t know.” He leaves while Foggy and Becky look worriedly on.

Back at Ryker’s, Turk and Grotto attempt to escape while it’s pitch dark out. Their escape attempt coincides with the Punisher’s own orchestrated escape, and Turk grabs onto the ladder of the Punisher’s helicopter. Grotto is much smarter and decides to stay. The Punisher cuts the ladder, leaving Turk to fall into the ocean below. Meanwhile, Daredevil goes to see the Kingpin and wants to know where he’s hiding Elektra. Fisk asks Daredevil if he’s perhaps ill and takes the whole thing as an odd, elaborate joke. Daredevil angrily stumbles out, while the Kingpin assures the other mob bosses, who have just arrived, that Daredevil knows nothing about their plans. Turns out, the narcotics shipment is naturally their operation, and Fisk is positive it will proceed smoothly now that Daredevil is off chasing ghosts. Later in the night, Foggy is woken up by a call from Judge Coffin. Apparently, Matt woke him up with an order to try and exhume Elektra’s body, prompting Foggy to go searching for his friend!

Elsewhere on Long Island, the Punisher lies in wait for the convoy transporting the drugs. He sets wire traps and shoots tear gas to cause the truck to veer off the road. The Punisher quickly guns down the whole convoy, until the last person attempts to surrender. Punisher kills him too and only afterwards does Punisher realize that he was only a child, a young teen. He knocks out his escort to avoid going back to prison, convinced that he’s needed more than ever, now that the enemy enlists children. Meanwhile, now that his efforts as both Matt Murdock the lawyer and Daredevil have failed, Matt takes a shovel and digs up Elektra’s body himself. He touches her face and breaks down, unable to deny any longer that this is indeed Elektra, and she’s dead. Foggy finds Matt and he tells Foggy how much he loved Elektra as they stumble off, nothing else able to be said.

Daredevil (1964 series) #182 Review by (April 30, 2025)

Review: This issue is very good but kind of a rough read. The majority of the issue revolves around Matt trying to convince himself that Elektra could be alive. As far as the five stages of grief go, Matt spends the whole issue in denial, with plenty of anger and bargaining thrown in too, which lead to several intense and striking scenes. Matt scares away potential clients, blows off his girlfriend, and severely worries his friends over his single-minded pursuit this issue. In fact, one of the hardest hitting scenes comes when Matt is demanding details on the coroner’s report for Elektra, causing Heather to storm out and their new client to be scared away. When Foggy asks Matt if he’s lost his mind, after a heavy silence, all he can say is, “I don’t know.” Yeesh. Even the Kingpin wonders if he’s okay, when Matt goes to him as Daredevil to ask about Elektra. This all culminates in an extremely intense scene where Matt literally digs up Elektra’s body and touches her face, causing him to have a breakdown when he can no longer deny that she’s dead! What a note to end on.

The other big part of the issue involves the Punisher being broken out of prison in order to handle a narcotics shipment that’s going down (naturally, Kingpin’s behind the shipment). This follows his brief appearance last issue and serves to set up the next couple. Punisher gets his own intense moment when he realizes that the last person he gunned down stopping the shipment was only a young teen. A young teen who tried to surrender, no less. There is exactly one amusing scene in this whole issue to keep it from being too depressing though. Naturally it involves Turk, who tries escaping at the same time as the Punisher, while his buddy Grotto has the good sense to just stay put. Turk gets dropped into the ocean for his troubles, as the Punisher ignores Turk’s offers of helping him. What’s more, the whole sequence is drawn completely in silhouette, for an artsy touch! Or a lazy one, but I’m willing to give Miller the benefit of the doubt.

Comments: Though Elektra’s dead body is seen in the issue, the Marvel Database does not count this as an appearance for her, so neither will we.
