Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #231 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

While Matt Murdock trains at Fogwell’s Gym, the Kingpin finishes up a meeting with his board of directors. One of his board expresses concern at some resource allocations, and notes that there is concern over his obsession with Matt Murdock. Fisk promptly has him let go and orders Wesley to arrange an “accident” for the man at an upcoming ski trip. Meanwhile, Ben Urich tells the police everything he knows about Nick Manolis’s death and his role in helping the Kingpin frame Matt. Urich is assigned an officer to act as his bodyguard, while Matt comes across a paper with Ben’s recent articles about the Kingpin and decides to watch over him from afar. Given Urich’s recent statements to the police, the nurse who killed Manolis, named Lois, is being relocated to Arizona which does not sit right with her. Lois decides to take matters into her own hands and heads to the Urichs’ apartment just after Ben called his wife Doris to inform her they’ll have a guest.

Ben and the officer arrive back at the apartment where both are immediately ambushed by Lois! Lois fights with the officer while Ben stumbles into the bathroom to find his wife hanging by her neck from the showerhead, quickly losing oxygen! Ben scrambles to grab something to cut his wife down while Matt arrives, surprising Lois and quickly taking her out! Ben manages to free his wife in the nick of time, and finds Lois tied up, clueing him in that Matt is still alive and looking out for him! Just then, Ben gets a call from Melvin Potter, saying that he has to talk to him about Daredevil tonight, and it’s urgent. While Ben can only numbly hang up, Matt overhears this and quickly heads towards Melvin’s shop. Elsewhere, Fisk arranges for the release of a dangerous psychopath for the next part of his plan. When Matt arrives at Melvin’s shop, he overhears Melvin on the phone with Betsy, telling her how Fisk threatened him to make a replica Daredevil suit or they’ll kill him. When Melvin ends his call, Matt sticks to the shadows and tells Melvin to make the suit, promising that no one will get hurt!

Meanwhile, Foggy tends to Karen at his apartment as she’s going through withdrawal. Feeling terrible about her life choices, Karen spots Paulo out of the window and realizes he must have followed her there! Foggy calls the police, while outside Matt perches on one of Fisk’s men’s cars and overhears the plan to have the released psychopath wear the Daredevil suit and be seen killing Foggy! The police soon arrive and spot Paulo, ordering him to surrender. Paulo quickly kills the two cops before firing into Foggy’s window, scaring Karen and him further! Fisk’s men alert him about Paulo and he tells them to stay put, but to kill Foggy or Karen if they try to escape! Fisk notes that his hired psychopath will have to move quickly. In the alley next to Foggy’s apartment building, one of Fisk’s men clarifies the plan to the fake Daredevil, who responds by beating him to death before climbing the fire escape!

Inside, Karen knocks out Foggy with a potted plant, reasoning that if she goes to Paulo, he won’t kill Foggy and he’ll be safe. On the roof, Matt surprises the fake Daredevil while Karen runs into Paulo in the alley below. Fisk’s men shoot at Paulo and Karen while Fisk listens to the whole thing. Back on the roof, Matt is able to subdue the fake Daredevil before turning his attention to the alley. Paulo and Fisk’s men continue their standoff and Paulo gets tagged. Thinking she’s about to die anyway, Karen grabs one last needle from Paulo’s pocket, but before she can use it, Matt jumps down and subdues Paulo and Fisk’s last remaining man. Shock and relief wash over Karen, as she collapses sobbing into Matt’s arms, the two former lovers once again reunited! Some time later, Ben reports on everything that went down. The psychopath was found naked on the roof while the records of Fisk’s killed men sparked an investigation that will keep his attorneys busy. Ben finishes by stating that he’s going to find out where Matt Murdock is and what kind of man he’s become! To be continued!

Daredevil (1964 series) #231 Review by (April 22, 2026)

Review: Part five of Born Again bucks the trend of opening with Matt laying down, instead opening with him training. It’s a nice way to symbolize his improved mental state now that he’s metaphorically and literally back on his feet. This issue is much more fast paced than previous parts, with a heavier focus on action as Matt works to protect those closest to him being targeted without tipping his hand too much. He saves the Urichs and Melvin Potter (in a way), culminating in facing off against a psychopath in a fake Daredevil suit and saving Karen. The fake Daredevil being used to lure him out is a neat idea, but over quickly, and one element that I thought the Netflix show utilized better (making him Bullseye there was genius). Matt and Karen’s long overdue reunion is also full of emotion (with even more reserved for next issue). I’ve seen some people who consider this the end of the story, even though it’s clearly not over yet. The final two parts (or really just the final one) are arguably slightly less good than the rest of the story, but they’re still important. All in all, the pacing, dialogue, art, and everything else are just as phenomenal as they have been, as this landmark story gears up for its climax!

Comments: Part five of Born Again.
