Synopsis

Defenders #13 synopsis by Thiago Sevilhano Martinez
Rating: 4 stars
Doctor Strange, Hulk and Valkyrie are in Strange's home when Nighthawk enters exploding the front door, claiming to have business with the Defenders. Hulk and Valkyrie attack him, which dodge them and throws Valkyrie down. The fight finishes when Dr. Strange holds his friends to listen to the visitor. Nighthawk presents himself and tells how he was called to a reunion with his previous partners on the Squadron Sinister - Hyperion, Dr. Spectrum and Whizzer - and a human-shaped alien, Nebulon the Celestial Man. In exchange for recovering them from their bad status after battles against other heroes - Thor and Iron Man - the Squadron Sinister had sold the Earth (!) to Nebulon. But he wanted it underwater, so the Squadron needed Nighthawk's help to build a laser with enough power to melt the polar icecaps. Nighthawk didn't want to join them, but was forced. At night, he escaped and so was there to ask Defenders help. Then, Nighthawk suddenly disappears. Dr. Strange asks for Namor's help, which denies it. Strange then teleports Namor to the house against his will. The Sub-Mariner becomes furious and is prepared to attack the Doctor, when Valkyrie makes him accept to join them arguing that the Atlantean would perish also if they fail. Namor is using a new uniform and Hulk makes a comment about "Fish-man funny new clothes". They find the Squadron Sinister in the Artic, and Nighthawk is imprisoned in a force globe. A great clash follows, ending with the Defenders victory: Hulk, Dr. Strange and Namor respectively defeats Hyperion, Dr. Spectrum and Whizzer. Valkyrie was not able to break Nighthawk's globe. Them Nebulon enters and traps all the Defenders in a globe, promising to destroy them.

Review / Commentaries

Defenders #13 Review by (December 28, 2020)

Comments: Part one of two parts. The Squadron Sinister first appeared in AVEENGERS #69-70; Nighthawk then went on to DAREDEVIL #62 then here. The SS are a bad guy version of the not-yet-introduced Squadron Supreme; they are based on DC’s Justice League with Nighthawk being Batman, Hyperion = Superman, Whizzer = Flash, and Dr Spectrum = Green Lantern. First appearance of the alien Nebulon who would appear several more times including in the DEFENDERS: THE BEST DEFENSE crossover. GIANT-SIZE DEFENDERS #1 takes place immediately before this issue.
