Immortal Hulk #43

Feb 2021
Al Ewing, Joe Bennett

Story Name:

We’re the Good Guys

Synopsis

Immortal Hulk #43 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Joe Fixit, inhabiting Bruce Banner’s body, is living on the edge in New York City, surviving by scams. He picks a rich man’s pocket, uses the credit card to buy expensive jewelry, which he pawns  for cash. He muses how Bruce would never stoop to such dishonest methods to stay alive because Bruce always wants to be the good guy….

On the Alpha Flight space station, Henry Peter Gyrich has the U-Foes (Vector, Vapor, X-Ray, Ironclad) practice for taking on the Hulk by using their individual powers to tear up a robotic stand-in for the Big Green Guy. They are tracking Hulk and can’t find him while he is in human form but once he transforms, they’ll have him….

Meanwhile, Doc Samson (still in Sasquatch’s body), Puck, and the newly recruited Shaman arrive at Shadow Base Site G on the original Gamma bomb testing site in New Mexico. They are hoping that Bruce Banner is hiding there but they can at least recover Samson’s own body and put his mind back in it. And then the horribly mutated form of Rick Jones bursts from the ground to surprise them….

In New York, Joe Fixit witnesses a pair of cops chasing down and beating a teenager in a “Hulk Smash” hoodie and wants to stay out of it but the Hulk inside comes out. The emaciated monster hurls the police car at the cops, who flee in terror. Then Hulk is blasted from behind: the U-Foes have arrived….

Review / Commentaries

Immortal Hulk #43 Review by (February 3, 2021)

Review: A rare look inside the mind of Joe Fixit distinguishes this issue which doesn’t arrive at the scene depicted on the cover until the final page. A bit skimpy as the remainder of the issue reminds us who the U-Foes are and what their powers are and gets Samson and Puck to the Shadow Base without them actually reaching the inside. And there’s a brief callback to the new Teen Brigade, supporters of the Hulk seen back in issue #28. But the issue seems to be only sowing some seeds for following issues. We can wait.

Comments: A Starbucks-like company is called Starlin’s, a nice touch for a Marvel comic. There’s a reference to Christian Grey, protagonist of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy of erotic novels. The inkers are Ruy Jose and Belardino Brabo. Issue includes a one-page tribute to the late Richard Corben (1940-2020), noted artist famed for HEAVY METAL and an occasional Marvel book.
