Synopsis

Marvel Team-Up (1972 series) #84 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Viper, the former Madame Hydra, is in control of the SHIELD Helicarrier. To tie together some complicated chronology, she reviews her recent history: as part of the Serpent Society, she fought Nomad and was defeated, crashing down into the basement of a burning house that was then destroyed in an explosion. She escaped through the sewer and was rescued by fellow terrorist Ishiro Tagara, who recognized her. They went to Japan where Viper healed from her injuries and she and Tagara fell in love. She evolved a master plan to destroy the United States, using a Hypno-Beam to control the minds of various SHIELD personnel including Clay Quartermain. She sent Silver Samurai to steal the Cavourite Crystal but he was stopped by Spider-Man and Black Widow; unable to obtain the Crystal, she had to devise an alternate power source for the teleportation ring. SS then had to recover the teleportation ring from John Belushi on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. Viper and SS were then able to install hypnotic devices in SHIELD HQ and control more agents. The big scheme: to wipe out the entire US government in one strike….

Spider-Man creates hang-gliders out of webbing so he and Black Widow can reach the Helicarrier unawares. They are almost spotted by a patrol but manage to hide in the nick of time by hanging from the side of the craft. But “Nancy” panics when she realizes where she is and Spidey must calm her down before they can continue. Then she kisses him, upsetting him so he tries to move on as he sees Nick Fury’s sky-car arriving…

…so Fury lands on the deck and there are brainwashed agents waiting to capture him but they don’t notice that Fury isn’t alone. Shang-Chi, borrowed from Sir Denis Nayland Smith, takes down the bad guys before they see him. But then Boomerang attacks, laying Fury low and the baddie hurls one of his namesake weapons at Shang and he knocks it out of the air. A gasarang follows but an elevator beneath Shang-Chi takes him down and away from the gas. The two fight on the descending elevator with Shang-Chi dodging the baddie’s attacks until he gets close enough to knock him down with a kick. But one last explosive boomerang overcomes the hero….

Spidey and Black Widow enter the ship through a porthole Fury had told them about only to find themselves facing a squad of SHIELD agents who take them to see Viper. “Nancy” takes one look at the villainess and memories kick in so she screams and faints. Viper orders the two executed. Then Boomerang shows up with the captive Shang-Chi—but surprise: It’s Fury disguised as the villain and Shang-Chi is also free and a big melee breaks out. Viper shrugs and heads to the bridge, knowing there’s nothing they can do to save the President. Spidey chases her and ends up being shocked and knocked overboard by Silver Samurai, with nothing to web onto, two miles above the ground….

Marvel Team-Up (1972 series) #84 Review by (January 6, 2026)

Review: The exciting and complicated story continues—once we’ve taken time for a continuity-heavy information dump. After that the action doesn’t stop with the heroes and the villains butting heads. Next issue reveals what the villains’ plan is and we find out what was at stake all along. Spoiler: It’s a big deal.

Interesting bit: When Shang-Chi arrives, the narration slips into first person as in his book, MASTER OF KUNG FU.

Comments: Part three of four parts. Viper’s confrontation with Nomad (the former Captain America) was in CAPTAIN AMERICA #182. Spidey and Black Widow battled Silver Samurai in MTU #57. Silver Samurai took the teleportation ring from John Belushi in MTU #74. Colorist Barry Grossman credited as Ben Sean. Gaspar Saladino did the lettering on page 1.
