Savage Avengers #3 Review by (July 15, 2022)
The Hand were invented by Frank Miller in Daredevil #174 and the Beast was created as their god/leader by Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz in the Elektra Assassin mini-series.

Black Knight's Ebony Blade is cursed to exacerbate its wielder's worst traits. When NK's squire Sean Dolan used the sword it turned him into the Bloodwraith (for the 1st time in Avengers Annual #22). Dane Whitman has often given up using the Blade. During 1 such period (from Avengers #343) he used a photonic sword (ie light sabre). It is that which he uses here for the 1st time in a long time.

Of course since the characters are living in a multiverse Deathlok only has to be *a* Miles Morales who is a Spider-Man.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Savage Avengers #3 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
1 of Avenger Prime's army of Deathloks came back in time to kill Conan in the present day for 'crimes against the timestream'. However this resulted in both of them plus a ragtag band of other heroes being sent back to Conan's Hyborian Age. Conan and the heroes banded together against the unstoppable Deathlok but only managed to escape him. Elektra (currently in the role of Daredevil) had an idea where they could go to get back to their own time. But meanwhile some Set cultists revived Thulsa Doom, the necromancer from King Kull's Thurian Age, and he agreed to combine his blood with that of Conan to bring their serpent god to Earth.

Elektra has brought these 'Savage Avengers' to the Temple Of The Beast. That demon will later be worshipped by the ninjas known as the Hand who have an intimate relationship with Elektra. However the Beast was around billions of years ago and this temple predates even the Thurian Age. Since the Great Cataclysm which sank Atlantis and ended that Age the temple has been deserted. Now it is a place of pilgrimage for Hyborian Age sorcerers, among whom at the moment is Cloak. And now Deathlok has caught up with them and attacks him.

But this is all part of Elektra's plan. Cloak was just bait for Deathlok and he now uses his cloak to teleport them both to where the others are waiting. Dagger uses a new modification of her power to fire arrows of light from a bow of light which temporarily damage the cyborg's system. As his nanotech repairs him Conan makes himself known atop a ziggurat. Deathlok races up the steps but he's attacked by Anti-Venom who uses his Spider-Man type agility and webbing to annoy the cyborg until he aims a bio-electric powered fist at him. But it is Black Knight who takes the blow, enabling his armour to analyse the bio-electric energy signature and generate a counter-frequency in his photonic sword, which then disrupts Deathlok's nervous system. DL tries to use the gamma energy he stole from Weapon H (in #1) to recharge himself. But WH is here to take it back, with a vengeance. Now as his system fails it is the turn of Conan. The 2 warriors clash but Conan's blade shatters that of the cyborg. And now Elektra steps in to end it. Deathlok is a reanimated dead man and Elektra, who was resurrected by the Hand, knows how to control the dead - especially in the Temple Of The Beast. She intends to make the time-travelling cyborg take them back home.

However an unexpected element disrupts the plan. Thulsa Doom arrives with the Set cultists and blasts them all except Conan. The 2 men from different prehistoric ages clash sword against 2 sorcerous blades. Conan's allies can't help him because Doom has infected their minds with terrible visions. Dagger fights an evil version of Anti-Venom who she is beginning to love, while her partner Cloak battles a demonic version of her - who *he* of course loves. Ant-Venom finds himself back in the grave he returned from. Black Knight faces the nightmare of his cursed Ebony Blade turning him into the Bloodwraith. Elektra thinks she is beset by the Beast himself. And Weapon H sees his family murdered. Meanwhile in reality they are attacking each other (and the occasional cultist who gets in the way). Other cultists help Thulsa Doom overwhelm Conan.

But it is Deathlok who ends the fray. Struggling to get Doom (I think) out of his head he emits a mighty blast which knocks everyone out. When the heroes recover they find DL gone. But also Thulsa Doom and his cultists have taken Conan (leaving his sword behind). Elektra senses that Doom's plan for Conan will put the whole world in danger.

The injured Deathlok is grappling with the fact that Elektra and Doom between them have reawakened memories of the man he was before he died and got remade into a cyborg. And that man was Miles Morales, Spider-Man.
