Savage Avengers #6 Review by (October 7, 2022)
The title is obviously a play on the film Escape From New York.

I notice the the previously intro has dropped all mention of Conan (or the Hyborian Age), probably for copyright reasons. It just says that Deathlok's time portal took the heroes to the distant past and has now brought them forward to 2099.

There have been several versions of 2099 AD (a possible future of Earth-616) and more than 1 version of Punisher 2099. The original collection of 2099 titles, including Punisher 2099, ended with 2099 A.D. Genesis 1-shot. The 2099 (and Punisher) in the 1998 2099: Manifest Destiny 1-shot is considered to be a separate future. The disruption of time at the end of the 2013 Age Of Ultron event caused time-disruptions in 2099. Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O'Hara) came back to 2013 to prevent the damage in Superior Spider-Man #17, getting his own SM 2099 vol 2 in 2014. During that series he temporarily visited 2099 to discover that the Spider-Verse event had completely changed it into a version labelled Dystopia (with its own Punisher). Then the multiverse got destroyed and another 2099 (again with its own Punisher) became 1 of the Secret Wars Battleworld realms (which survived to host 2015's Contest Of Champions including Punisher who got killed again). In the replacement universe Miguel was still in 2015 in SM 2099 vol 3 but discovered that the Dystopia 2099 had been carried forward. However during that series another future known as The Fist's 2099 appeared. At the end of that series Miguel restored the timeline from Secret Wars which has now been designated 2100 AD, and stayed there. (There are probably other versions of 2099 I've missed.)

After all that this 2099 and Punisher seem to be different from any of them. In the original his wife and son, Anji and Dean, weren't killed they left him, and Lotusland was the name of a film studio in the Hulk 2099 series. But the Cyber-Nostra were 1 of his main opponents. Most importantly Ultron was never seen in 2099.

There was an identical Lyla AI who accompanied Miguel O'Hara in many of his apps.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Savage Avengers #6 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Deathlok's time portal has taken our heroes from the Hyborian Age to 2099 where they were immediately attacked by Punisher 2099 (Jake Gallows).

However this issue begins with a flashback to 2022 where 2 Alchemax scientists are studying what looks like 1 of Deathlok's arms found in the wreckage of the Madbomb incident (presumably our #1).

But we leave that teaser and rejoin our gang running from Punisher and his heavily-armed flying machine (independently controlled by an AI). Deathlok's temporal circuits currently don't have enough power for another time jump. Gallows is after them because they include a Deathlok.

Meanwhile we learn that that our heroes are being observed by someone who recognises Dane Whitman (Black Knight), Daredevil (currently Elektra) and a Hulk, and deduces that they are time-travellers. He orders a team to find and kill these Avengers and bring the Deathlok to him.

Cloak has managed to transport them to a temporary hiding place where a holographic AI named Lyla pops up to give them (and us) useful information. Jake Gallows became Punisher after his wife and son were killed during the Lotusland offensive. He took revenge on the Cyber-Nostra for that, and continued on from there.

The team make there way to the ruins of Avengers Mansion where believers await the Avengers' return. But they are attacked by a troop of Deathloks serving the Machine Empire of the Prime Deathlok. At that point Punisher catches up with them but decides that any enemy of the Deathloks is a friend of his. He and our DL hold off the robotic foe while the rest of the team enter the Mansion to find weapons.

Elektra flies out using Archangel's metal wings. Black Knight finds his Ebony Blade which he's reluctant to pick up again. Cloak has Dr Octopus' metal arms. Anti-Venom drives the Spider-Mobile while his passenger Dagger wields Dr Spectrum's Power Prism. Weapon H has Absorbing Man's wrecking ball. BK rides a dragon-like version of his old atomic steed and has the Blade plus a power-lance. The Deathloks are all defeated and Gallows tells our Deathlok that the Prime Deathlok is Ultron.
