Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #18 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

The Warriors Three, Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg, accompanied by Hannah Fairmont and Detectives Demitrius Collins and Brady O’Neil are fighting for their lives against monsters who are really human bystanders, transformed by the magic of Enrakt of the Enchanters. The heroes must restrain their blows though the monsters know no such mercy. Then O’Neil suffers a critical throat wound and needs immediate help…and then Thor returns from the Eighth Day adventure, unleashing Mjolnir’s power, weaving a force of magical energy around the monsters which returns them to their human forms. Hannah reminds everyone that O’Neil is gravely wounded. Out of her sight, Thor transforms back into Jake Olson and performs an emergency repair on his wound. Demitrius recovers and spots Jake and tries to arrest him but Jake runs off and Volstagg (who knows Thor/Jake’s secret) “accidentally” gets in Demitrius’ way. In another alley, Jake transforms back into Thor and heads to Avengers Mansion. There, he meets with Scarlet Witch. Wanda detects the residue left by Enrakt from when he inhabited Mjolnir, allowing Thor to track the Enchanters. Thor takes off and Wanda wants to go with him but he denies her, saying it is an affair of the gods….

Loki, disguised as Odin, watches from Asgard, wondering if he should rescue the All-Father or stand back to see how the battle with the Enchanters turns out. He recalls when he offered to rescue Odin from the Dark Goods and Odin rebuffed him, threatening him with his wrath. So Loki decides to call on his new ally, Mephisto….

In a distant dimension, the Enchanters, Brona, Magnir, and Enrakt, are attacking Odin with their magical powers while the All-Father withstands them with his scepter. But their Living Talismans allow them to absorb Odin’s energy and transform into energy beings themselves. Then Thor comes to the rescue and eschews Mjolnir’s energy blasts for solid blows to the enemy which lays them out and Thor seeks to escape with Odin. But Enrakt calls upon the landscape itself to form a huge dragon-like creature which swallows Thor and Odin….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #18 Review by (August 12, 2025)

Review: And Thor returns from the crossover which had occupied the previous issue, ready to battle the bad guys anew! The Jake Olson parts are getting a bit tiresome by now but fortunately it’s coming to a climax soon so bear with it. But the Enchanters bit doesn’t really do much either, boiling down to “The Bad Guys turn green and Thor fights them before a giant something swallows Thor and Odin.” There’s not a lot of plot as the art must accommodate a lot of long-winded challenges back and forth between the heroes and the villains. The only promising bit is Mephisto, a longtime pain in Thor’s neck, now teaming up with Loki a longer-timed pain in Thor’s neck. So…more stuff next time.

Comments: Part five of seven parts. Odin was prisoner of the Dark Gods in issues #4-12. The lettering is split between Richard Starkings, Comicraft, and Wes Abbott.
