Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #28 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Thor stops by a soda shop with his friends, Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg, and they cause a sensation. Volstagg has eaten $727.00 worth of ice cream and Thor has no money; a brief commotion ensues, leading Hogun to plunk down some gold coins and the heroes leave. One of the customers, however, decides to depart before the Asgardians recognize him as the Wrecker. The heroes walk down the street, taking in the curiosities of modern New York, interacting with the passers-by. Volstagg raids a hot dog cart, leading to more coins from Hogun. A little boy asks if Thor is really a god when the priest says he isn’t. His mom tries to shush him but Thor answers the honest question: he says Asgard is a place of wonder and heroism but there is someone yet bigger above him….

The Wrecker returns to his hideout where he meets with his teammates in the Wrecking Crew: Thunderball, Piledriver, and Bulldozer. They have been stripped of their Asgardian powers but can absorb some power from what is available. Wrecker informs them that he has seen the four Asgardian heroes in the city and they can absorb their powers and regain all of their strength….

In Asgard, Giraboor, a blind prophet, brings Sif news that evil is approaching that threatens Asgard and all the Nine Worlds. Sif, now in charge of Asgard while Odin is in Odinsleep, Sif sends out a blanket threat to anyone who would attack Asgard because they believe the Realm to be weak with a woman in charge that they can expect war….

While Thor and the Warriors Three walk through Central Park, they are waylaid by the Wrecking Crew and a battle breaks out. The Asgardians are more powerful but eventually each of the baddies latches onto a hero and drains him of some energy. Thor, enraged, throws Wrecker off, preparing for violence but the four bad guys, having gotten what they came for, run away. They heroes prepare to pursue until they notice that Hogun appears to be dead….

Thor (1998 series) #28 Review by (September 16, 2025)

Review: And again…following a rather uninspired two issue story featuring a familiar old villain, we get…another uninspired two-issue story with a familiar old set of villains. The Asgardians have some fun and then the baddies jump on them, steal their powers and depart. Nothing particularly creative. The odd part is that once again we are informed there is a Supreme Being who outranks Thor and the Asgardians; Dan Jurgens had just done this in THOR ANNUAL 2000, and here it is again. Huh. Check out the comments there and come back for the next issue.

Comments: Part one of two parts. The title is a pun on “wreaking havoc” i.e. causing a ruckus. The splash page is a copy of the one from THOR #143, with updated hairstyles and clothing. Signs in buildings feature the names Kirby, Simonson, and JRJR (John Romita Jr.). The Wrecking Crew lost their Asgardian powers in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #505. The Casket of Ancient Winters first appeared in THOR #346-348. Only appearance of Giraboor.
