Rating: 4 stars

Majeston Zelia, ruler of the Dark Gods, has taken her throne in the remodeled Asgard. She commands Adva to use the Continuum Gateway to bring over the captive Odin, chained to a massive weight. Zelia is taking her revenge on the All-Father for spurning her love. He spits in her face and she slaps him then repeatedly as he hurls threats. He vows revenge but Zelia claims there is no one to rescue him as Perrikus vows that none but Thor remain and he is likely dead too. Zelia also mentions Odin’s alliance with the Olympians but D’Chel the Deceptor has seen to that….

Thor and Hercules have arrived in Olympus to find the realm in ruins. They find the grave of Herc’s friend Dionysius. Then Hermes arrives, calling Thor an evil one and trying to run him down with his chariot. Then Ares and Atlas attack Thor calling him a villain; he hurls Mjolnir to break Ares’ incoming spears but when the hammer returns it nearly takes Thor’s head off though when he ducks, Atlas is conked on the noggin. Pluto appears, calling Hercules a traitor for allying with Thor. Then Zeus himself appears, condemning Herc for abandoning his birthright. Thor attests that had they known Olympus was in danger they both would have come to their rescue. Zeus denounces him, revealing that it was the Gods of Asgard that attacked and destroyed Olympus. It was all of the famous mighty warriors and Odin commanding with Loki by his side. Thor says this is not possible, Herc is provoked by Thor’s claim that Zeus would lie. Thor also reveals that all of the gods are missing, which the Olympians take to be a lie….

Meanwhile in Asgard, Majeston Zelia allows Odin to see this transpiring. She brings forth D’Chel who demonstrates his power of deception by turning Perrikus into the exact double of Odin. Odin asks why she would desire war between the gods. Zelia responds that what she wants is the total destruction of Odin, taking not just his life but his legend…

Hercules demands Thor apologize to Zeus; Thor avers he is telling the truth. Zeus calls on Hercules to make a choice: will he side with Thor and the Avengers or with Olympus? Herc responds by rushing to attack Thor…who lowers his hammer, swearing that the Gods of Asgard were not involved in the attack on Olympus. And Herc, knowing Thor as he does, drops his fist, agreeing that Thor tells the truth. So Zeus, in anger, transports them both back to Earth…

…where Herc wants to celebrate Thor’s victory over Zeus but the God of Thunder chooses to fly off to continue his quest. Then Herc overhears on a car radio Chucky Diamond declaring that the Thunderbolts are really the Masters of Evil. Herc, recalling his defeat at the hands of the Masters, decides to mete out his wrath on them….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #7 Review by (April 22, 2025)

Review: A more focused issue: We learn the Dark Gods’ goals: destroying Odin body, soul, and legend. And their means: engineering a war between the Norse and the Greek gods. And Thor and Hercules are caught in the middle. Thor’s commitment to truth shines forth, even when he is surrounded by enemies but the real surprise is Hercules, sticking with Thor even when surrounded by family and friends. Sadly, Herc heads on out of this title and we get to follow the uptight Thor as he goes back to pretending to be an EMT. Oh and JRJR’s art is seen to great advantage in this issue, as I think his style suits tales of gods and heroes better than the lives of ordinary people. Really like his sinister Dark Gods.

Comments: Part two of two parts; Hercules’ adventure continues in THUNDERBOLTS (1997) #22. First appearance of D’Chel the Deceptor. Gregory Wright incorrectly credited as colorist, corrected in issue #10.
