Rating: 4 stars

In a secret cavern, the mystic Mistress Kya has divined the arrival of a man from her mother’s time. She addresses her robed followers that Zarrko had written about this event and he also gave them the means to triumph, if they survive the coming war….

In the South Pacific, a man is caught up in a hurricane and gives himself up for dead but a large cloaked figure takes hold of him then stops the storm and flies off. The rescued man believes he has seen Thor….

But Thor is in the palace dungeon, having been notified of the presence of a man with superhuman abilities. Loki assumes the prisoner is an uncatalogued mutant and can’t explain why he was never detected before this. The young thief Jordy denies any knowledge of him but Thor recognizes his old friend and ally Thialfi. Thialfi explains how he was fighting Zarrko in the battle of Asgard and his foe opened a portal to escape but an explosion blew Thialfi into it and so here he is. He asks why Thor is missing his left arm and isn’t carrying Mjolnir. Thor is evasive, calling for a celebration of the return of his old friend. Thor tells Loki to set Jordy free as she is of no concern to them….

To verify the truth of Zarrko’s prophecy, Mistress Kya opens a viewing port to see that Thor’s visitor is indeed Thialfi; she also sees Loki holding Jordy for questioning—as he realizes they are being spied upon. Before she closes the portal, she causes a device in Loki’s hand to explode, in retribution for her mother. Loki blames Jordy for what happened and she flees, pursued by guards…until she runs into Thor’s son Magni. He hides her from Loki and, to her surprise, he shows her a secret exit from the castle….

Thor gives Thialfi a tour of New Asgard on winged horses and Thialfi is suitably impressed. They see many humans reacting to the sight of Thor with wonder and admiration. He explains how everyone has all they need and takes his guest to an enclave of musicians and artists, who have the leisure to create as they are led. Citizens explain how there is free health care for everyone and it all works. Other colonies are for philosophers, scholars, and those with other interests.

Thor takes Thialfi to the Middle East where the longstanding conflicts have been settled: by erasing all boundaries and abolishing all religions. This is the conflict that cost Thor his arm. He reveals that he harnessed the power of Earth’s core to provide humanity with a clean, efficient, and infinite source of energy. And to answer Thialfi’s question about who does the dirty work, Thor say that it is done by those who want to, citing carpenters and cooks who work out of the love for the task. Thialfi is a bit skeptical but Thor tells him that eventually every human will see the value of aspiring to godhood….

Magni shows Jordy out of the castle and she is stunned to discover he is the prince….

Mistress Kya asks her acolytes to bring Thialfi to her to be put to use. And then it is revealed that Kya has Mjolnir in her possession….

Thor (1998 series) #70 Review by (October 7, 2026)

Review: So we see more of the glory that was Asgard resting on the foundations of totalitarianism and that for it to work they’ve had to stamp out religions and national boundaries violently (the part John Lennon doesn’t mention in “Imagine”); I’m sure Jews felt this was all a bit familiar. Anyway, we’re introduced to Lord Thor and the weaselly Loki who is in his element, crushing dissent. And we meet Prince Magni, a decent enough lad, who hasn’t encountered all of the dark parts of his father’s kingdom. And we’re introduced to the Resistance, led by Mistress Kya, daughter of the Scarlet Witch whose plans are already sounding a bit extreme. And Jordy gets to escape to fight in another issue.

Thor doesn’t address the question Thalfi was really asking, “who cleans up the garbage (or shovels manure)?” I doubt there are enough people who would do that out of love for the job to actually get the task done.

Comments: “The Reigning Part 2.”—Cover. This timeline is officially designated Earth-3515. It is revealed that Sif died in the fall of Asgard in #67 (but see issues #74 and following) but the Warriors Three are still alive and kicking. Letters by Randolph Gentile, Virtual Calligraphy.
