Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #73 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The military force sent to quell the rebellion in Spain reports back to Lord Thor, who rebukes them for trying to start a riot. Fandral and Hogun note that the rebels had forbidden weapons. Thor turns to Loki who should have eradicated all such weapons but the trickster asks permission to increase the use of the Reconditioning Centers. Magni calls them magical lobotomies; Thor scolds his son for wanting to coddle the rebels who were dangerous. Thialfi intervenes, suggesting that a violent reaction will only turn citizens against Thor and that those who speak treason condemn themselves as fools. Thialfi admits that the rebels needed to be stopped but the response was too violent. Thor says he will consider the matter and dismisses them all. Loki tells Amora of his suspicions of Thialfi and determines to learn more….

As Magni and Thialfi walk away, T fills M in on the onetime rivalry and hostility between Thor and Loki though now they are much closer as Loki was needed as the security chief of the kingdom. Thialfi sounds Magni out on overthrowing the kingdom which Magni calls treason—so Thalfi tells him it is his duty to strike him down as a traitor. Magni just gives him an angry look and departs on his chariot….

Thor (1998 series) #73 Review by (November 3, 2026)

Review: The main plot concerns Thialfi’s decision to join the rebels while Magni still has a ways to go, uncomfortable but not rebelliously so. The real point of interest in the issue is the lengthy flashback informing us how Thor’s Avengers friends and allies reacted to all this. A dark fate was already implied for Tony Stark in issue #68; well, here’s everyone else. The sequence is shocking for both the level of violence and for Thor’s former close attachments to these heroes. Now we know why there was no going back for the God of Thunder.

Comments: “The Reigning Part 5.”—Cover. This timeline is officially designated Earth-3515. The Council Elite is mentioned, they appeared in issues #61 and 65. Cap’s damaged shield was seen briefly at the end of issue #69. Letters by Randolph Gentile, Virtual Calligraphy.
