Thor #480 Review by (January 10, 2024)

Review: Thor is starting to feel as restrained and distrusted in Wundagore as he did in Asgard but it’s easier for him to leave this place. That’s a very brief summary of the issue though the story is fleshed out with a battle between Thor and Blitziana, clarifying her jealousy of Thor and the interest of the other Godpackers in seeing whether Thor can get away with challenging the High and Mighty Evolutionary. And we also learn that Jane Foster still has feelings for Thor—and he for her though he is not willing to admit them yet. So while not much goes on in terms of comic book thrills, there is much going on within hearts and minds.

Comments: Yugoslavia broke up into five smaller nations in 1991-92 (it was a long process). The letters page includes one by future Thor writer (maybe) Dana M. Perkins.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #480 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Returning to Mount Wundagore from Asgard, Thor comes under fire from a military jet, mistaking him for an enemy craft. He rebukes the pilot who fires a heat-seeking missile at him. Thor leads it on, hoping to dodge it but instead it explodes near him; enraged, Thor calls down lightning upon the plane, destroying it but leaving time for the pilot to eject. Reaching Wundagore, Thor is surprised to see the peak, once destroyed, now looking like new. But it is a hologram and Thor descends into the realm of the High Evolutionary and the Godpack. HE is angry with Thor for leaving to take Don Blake home without asking permission; Thor bristles while the others watch with interest this conflict between their master and the God of Thunder. Thor questions HE as to whether he knew Don Blake had been imprisoned within the mountain; HE bristles but recalls that he had been told by Odin but had assumed it to be a dream, residue of a magical influence that mountain has. Angered at his father’s treatment of him, Thor lashes out but his blows are halted by Blitziana who challenges him to battle. Instead, Thor apologizes and greets Jane Foster and her son Jimmy Kincaid. HE lets it all go….

In Asgard, Balder, Sif, and Beta Ray Bill are battling giant trolls when they are joined by the New Thor, Red Norvell, and the enemies are quickly vanquished. Norvell asks if he can speak to Sif privately and they fly off….

Back at Wundagore, Jane shows Thor the Animutants she teaches. They are making great progress but they dislike being ignored by the High Evolutionary in favor of the Godpack. When Jane learns that Thor and Sif are no longer in a relationship, she tentatively reaches out to Thor who quickly excuses himself, citing a need to check up on Don Blake. Thor asks permission of HE to leave and is denied, the master refusing to explain his reasons. The Godlings look on but concede that it is Thor’s right to leave if he wants to. Thor mentions that he will decide whether to stay with the Godpack or not when he returns. Blitziana, faithful to the HE, tries to stop Thor from leaving and he destroys her mace with a swing of Mjolnir. As he walks out, she blasts him with a bolt of electricity, challenging him to battle. Thor lays down his hammer and strikes back.  The other Godlings watch as the two electrically powered heroes fight with Blitziana insisting she should be the only one of their type in the Godpack. Their combat nearly kills a hiker on another mountain with Thor calling for her to reign in her violent rages. Thor picks up a massive rock, ready to dump it on her but realizes in time that he is no “vengeful slayer.” Jimmy rushes out to pick up Thor’s hammer for him and the cliff collapses beneath him; Thor catches the boy and returns him to his mother. Jane demands that all of the Godpack, even Thor, stay away from her and her son. Thor grants that her wish is reasonable, takes up Mjolnir and flies off, claiming he will never return. The Godpack doesn’t know what to make of this but the High Evolutionary keeps his wisdom to himself….
