Totally Awesome Hulk #22 Review by (June 2, 2020)

Review: Hulk versus a pair of monsters that may be stringer than he is? Let’s do it! And the battle scene is quite nifty, giving us a fight with the gruesome H-Beta and a more enigmatic outcome to the handsomer H-Alpha, who may be more deadly but he has more brain and therefore has his own agenda. Amadeus is naturally depressed that things couldn’t be resolved non-violently and his pride takes a hit, sending him off into his own adventures as the other guys all move on in their book. That’s what he gets for having a moral canter and hanging around a bunch of anti-heroes and outright villains. And H-Alpha/Weapon H has the potential to be a cool character in his own right.

Comments: H-Alpha will become Weapon H in the ensuing issues of WEAPON X (2018 series), leading to a series of his own: WEAPON H.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #22 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Story continues from WEAPON X #6.

In the Weapon X facility, Dr. Alba has released H-Beta, a Hulkverine, combining the powers of Hulk and Logan, to fight Domino and Warpath….

Elsewhere in the facility, Old Man Logan, Lady Deathstrike, and Sabretooth turn on Hulk (Amadeus Cho), letting him know he failed to rescue Bobby Andrews (H-Beta) by trying to stop them from killing the bad guys. He clobbers the three of them and heads off to rescue his (other) teammates. Hulk crashes through the wall to engage the monster but is surprised by his claws, taking some injuries to his hands. Hulk tries to appeal to Bobby inside the monster but Alba tells him Bobby no longer exists: H-Beta has no brain beyond that which powers emotional responses, like anger. She exhorts Hulk to give it all his strength so she can see what her creation is capable of. As the two battle, the ground above cracks open and Warpath and Domino have to save people from falling in. And then Amadeus lets Hulk out of the trunk and he hurls H-Beta to the surface, following him to continue their fight. At this point, H-Alpha is ready and Dr. Alba frees it to join the other two above. H-Alpha, a gray Hulk with retractable claws and Adamantium rods sticking out of his back, faces Hulk and H-Beta. Rev. William Stryker halts his escape to watch what happens next. And what happens next is that H-Alpha decapitates H-Beta with a single swipe of its claws, as Alba had programmed it to destroy the greatest threat it faces—and that was H-Beta. Alba tries directing it to attack the Hulk but it balks and, remembering what had been done to it, it goes after Stryker and his group. Stryker’s guards open fire but Hulk seizes the monster, allowing the bad guys to get away; there is a brief fight which trashes the rest of the area, with the team rescuing civilians (and Domino lamenting the destruction of the bank). Hulk and H-Alpha face one another, then the monster retracts its claws and leaps off into the distance. Hulk is angry that the monster got away but Logan plans to track it down—but Amadeus doesn’t want to hear it, quitting the team. Sabretooth looks at his teammates and announces that they are the new Weapon X….
