Totally Awesome Hulk #23 Review by (June 8, 2020)

Review: And so it goes: the Totally Awesome Hulk’s book ends with a blastoff, not a whimper. He gets a little more of a character arc in that here he’s told, in contrast to what Bruce Banner said, that he certainly does have anger issues which stem from his pride. Amadeus’ fail-safe was to shoot himself into space and figure things out from there, in a new title as part of Marvel Legacy following up on the SECRET EMPIRE event. Greg Pak’s sharp and humorous writing made this series much more entertaining than it had a right to be.

Comments: Final issue of series. Cover is a homage to THE INCREDIBLE HULK SPECIAL #1 (1968).

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #23 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Amadeus Cho steps out of the shower and sees a large figure in the misted-over mirror and is startled. Once he realizes it was his normal reflection, he decides that he’s had enough…

Kamal (Ms. Marvel) Khan and Cindy (Silk) Moon arrive at Amadeus’ apartment in the Olympus Group Building, having been invited by the boy genius. There they meet SHIELD Agent Jake Oh and all are greeted by Amadeus’ sister Maddy Cho. The next guest is a surprising one: T’Challa, the Black Panther, in casual wear. They all sit down to a meal of tacos and Korean cuisine; afterward, Amadeus cones to the reason he has invited them: the Hulk has been out of control recently (see issues #19-20) and he trusts them to help him learn just how far he can go with his powers….

The experiment puts Amadeus on the moon in a space suit as the others orbit in an Olympus Group shuttle, mentally linked to Amadeus. A massive nuclear bomb is dropped on his and that triggers Amadeus’ transformation into the Hulk. So, in their collective mind, they stand and watch as Amadeus opens the trunk of his car and lets Hulk out. Hulk asks to be let loose; Amadeus replies that he just did; Hulk says he’s always holding back. His friends insist Amadeus isn’t the Hulk as he never does anything through anger. Hulk responds that pride comes from anger and his friends all laugh at him and that Maddy will always hate him for causing their parents’ deaths—and Amadeus will hate her for that. Amadeus insists it’s all a lie, he doesn’t hate him friends but Hulk reacts by hammering the moon and causing a quake. Amadeus knows he can’t hold Hulk back but he has prepared for this: he signals to T’Challa who hit a switch and nanobots build a shuttle around Hulk and blast him into space where he will have a lab to figure out what’s going on. But Maddy says, “don’t you remember what happened last time someone shot the Hulk into space?”

Story continues in INCREDIBLE HULK #709.
