War of the Realms #2 Review by (April 17, 2019)

Review: One big battle issue before the heroes split up to head into the tie-ins does a masterful job of showcasing each main character however briefly. Dauterman and Wilson are among my favorite Thor artists and they bring the same magical feeling to this epic.

Comments: Special issue includes some of Russell Dauterman's costume design sketches, Giuseppe Camuncoli and Elia Bonetti's variant covers for the series, an ad for the forthcoming THE ART OF THE WAR OF THE REALMS, This Week in Marvel featuring Jason Aaron's new tattoo (and Marvel exec Ryan Penagos too), a gallery of international variant covers, and the checklist.

War of the Realms #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

The War of the Realms has come to Manhattan! Jane Foster oversees refugees flooding into Dr Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum which can accommodate a couple million people. Wolverine and the Punisher team up to clear the streets of Dark Elves. Captain America is evacuating buildings, pausing briefly to take down Frost Giants. Iron Man and Black Panther want to teleport people to Avengers Mountain but all networks are down, thanks to Dario Agger of Roxxon. Doctor Strange is unable to work his magic because Malekith has the War Witches casting an anti-magic blanket over the city. Freyja is battling the Queen of Heven while Spider-Man is annoying Sindr Queen of Muspelheim, with wisecracks. She-Hulk and Ulik are punching each other as Enchantress faces off with Ghost Rider—until a Viking ship lands on her and Jane Foster disembarks. And then the War Horn of Asgard sounds...

…and Odin arrives on horseback, leading the Valkyries and mowing down the enemy. Jane hitches a ride with Brunnhilde (the famous Valkyrie) and asks to be taken to Malekith; here's where Brun learns that Jane was the female Thor. As Freyja tells Odin that Loki is dead, eaten by his father Laufey, the Giant King smashes Odin from behind. Jane and Blade kill the War Witches, lifting the ban on magic so Dr. Strange is able to teleport the wounded to safety—but his spell is out of control so all of the heroes are sent to Avengers Mountain. Realizing they have lost the battle the heroes make alternate plans: Freyja is going to Jotunheim to rescue Thor. Odin plans to shut down Malekith's Black Bifrost. Sif and Black Panther want to send the Agents of Wakanda to take on Roxxon. Captain Marvel intends to fight in the trenches with her own army including Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Daredevil wants to see to the blinded Heimdall. Freyja names Jane Foster All-Mother in her absence. They watch the television screen as reports come in of invasions all over the world and they see the Valkyries cut down by the enemy with Brunnhilde, the last one, being stabbed in the back by Malekith and beheaded....
