Synopsis

Black Widow (2016 series) #8 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

In Washington D.C., one of the Headmistress’ child assassins dons a school uniform, brushes her hair, practices smiling, and departs the home, leaving the captive owners behind, and boards a school bus, exciting comments from the students who don’t recognize her, for a field trip to the White House….

At the President’s residence, they are given special pins and greeted by a blonde tour guide named Nat. Nat takes them around the building, getting the details wrong, while Ilija (the Weeping Lion) employs his psychic powers to identify the killer for Black Widow. A little girl corrects Nat about the visit of Mikhail Gorbachev and Natasha whirls on her, trying to get her to admit to being an assassin. Another kid asks when they will meet the Vice President and Nat realizes she’s the one, with some mocking comments by Ilija. When she tries to isolate the kid, she is stabbed in the hand with the special pin. The girl flips into the air, snaps a Secret Service Agent’s neck with her knees and seizes his gun, opening fire at Nat and dashing down the hall. At the same time, Ilija informs her that there are two more assassins among the girls and they have shot Ilija and are threatening everyone else. Nat takes down the armed kid with a Widow’s Bite as she runs by. The girl is cornered by Secret Service Agents, revealing she has been trained from birth to assassinate the Vice-President. Natasha asks to speak to the child; she introduces herself and asks the girl’s name. She replies, “My name is Death!” Nat explains that she too was made a living weapon by Headmistress but the villainess is now dead and Nat can arrange a happy life for the child. The girl wavers a second…and then SHIELD Agents crash though the window as Natasha grabs the girl and leaps out of the window. Nat tosses the girl to a SHIELD Agent, mentioning the other two who all need to be deprogrammed. and she vanishes over the fence….

Black Widow (2016 series) #8 Review by (April 14, 2026)

Review: An offbeat issue following a dark and intense mission for Black Widow, searching for a child assassin who has infiltrated the White House to kill the Vice-President. So why is the story so funny? It turns the situation from the previous grim issues upside down by showing us Natasha being uncomfortable as a tour guide and testy about the discomfort. And there is some humor in the kid’s ability to make fools of the Secret Service. And the acrobatics of the action scenes are masterfully presented by Chris Samnee as is his habit. And it ends with a cameo by the weird Unseen (see Comments), who is not a usual guest star in a series like this.

Comments: “Bring me Moose and Squirrel” is a giveaway to the child assassin; it’s a reference to Boris Badenov, the Russian (actually Pottsylvanian) villain from the ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE cartoon show (1959-1964). The agent on page 18, panel two, is revealed in issue #10 to be Winter Soldier. One of the FBI people is Agent 33/ Kara Lynn Palamas, previously seen only in HERCULES: HEART OF CHAOS #1-3, written by Tom DeFalco. The Unseen is the former Nick Fury, replacing Uatu the Watcher who died in the ORIGINAL SIN event; Fury was returned to normal in FANTASTIC FOUR (2018) #25. Mark Waid credited as co-scripter.
