After the 9/11 attacks on America,
a little boy named David Colton has his life changed….
Recently thawed from the ice,
Captain America is sitting incognito in a diner when he overhears a police
radio report a gunman. Cap finds the location and learns the suspect has stolen
a motorcycle and is heading to the UN building. After getting directions, Cap
takes a bike in pursuit. He catches up to the guy and spots that he’s wearing a
belt of explosives. At the UN, Cap talks to the man and as former military, Cap
orders him to stand down and he does. Then Iron Man arrives and remotely shuts
off the bomb….
Later, after Shellhead explains to
Cap what the United Nations is, he invites Cap to join the Avengers. Cap declines,
saying that he is a soldier and must return to active duty….
At the recruiting center, David
Colton tries to sign up despite asthma, poor vision, and a scrawny physique. A mystery
man overhears this and soon David is in the Army….
Steve Rogers undergoes tests at a
military training lab and they are convinced he is the original Captain
America. Steve meets with General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross who wants to know
why he came to the Pentagon? Steve tells him that it’s because he has no family
or friends, the only place he belongs is in the Army. Ross welcomes him back
and gives him his first assignment….
David Colton is in the Army where
he is the target of bullies; his mother calls him to rebuke him for his foolish
decision, especially in light of his brother’s death in Kuwait. The bullies see
him crying and he takes another beating….
Cap’s first assignment is helping
the Fantastic Four defeat the Mole Man. Afterwards, Cap and Reed Richards meet
and talk things over. The government is worried about Doctor Doom, newly risen
to power in Latveria, where American diplomats and staff have gone missing and
the military is putting together a strike force to rescue them. Reed tells
Steve what he knows about Doom. Reed offers the help of the FF but the use of
super-powered people in combat has been banned, Steve being an exception as he
is a soldier. Reed confesses his father’s hero-worship of Captain America and
shows Steve a Captain America action figure. Steve asks if they made one of
Bucky too. They did.
David Colton is brutally beaten by
his sergeant, losing his temper at David’s weakness. A mystery man visits him
in the hospital and tells David they can cure his asthma….
Cap meets with the other members
of the team planning to infiltrate Latveria, a Marine squad called the Howling
Commandos. Cap meets Terry “Chill” Mendoza and marksman Julie Slate. And there’s
another member, a red-haired soldier with a shield like Cap’s….
