In a bar, three men are discussing a plot to use the Leader to take over Doom’s empire. Steve Rogers overhears this and orders the men out, reminding him that American soldiers died to give them the right to talk nonsense in a bar. The decide to fight Steve…

…who is bailed out of jail by Tony Stark and Sam Wilson. Tony mentions that he has been watching the guy from the bar, a Roxxon lobbyist named Jake Manford. He then explains that the United Nations wants a coalition to locate the WMDs in Latveria and do not want the Avengers, whose presence would be seen as too aggressive. And they want Captain America on the team….

So Steve visits SHIELD’s new secret headquarters in back of diner in New York. Nick Fury Jr. outlines the situation in Latveria: three factions are competing for control: 1) True Latveria led by a masked man calling himself Salvation, hinting he is Doom returned, 2) Latveria Liberators led by siblings Mara and Melor Sandu, terrorists, and 3) the Homeland Party led by Alina who appears to be a pacifist. Fury asks Steve to head the group searching for the WMDs but Steve declines, concerned that he is being used for some secret political purpose. Steve then gets a call from Thunderbolt Ross who explains that he is petitioning the UN to allow a US military team to go in and search for the weapons and he wants Steve on his team. But Steve is distracted when he sees Sharon Carter waiting for him.…

Steve and Sharon sit in a café, talking about their complicated relationship and decide they want to continue, despite the geographic situation (he’s in New York, she’s in Washington) and their jobs. She tells him to go out and save the world again….

General Ross sits meditating an a red room….

Two weeks later, Captain America is training for the mission with the other SHIELD agents, Trevor Tambling, Joe Ramos, and Charles Castlemore, and the Red Widow. Later, Steve tells Fury he’s not sure he trusts the team, especially Red Widow. Fury explains she has been cleared and outlines the mission: Enter Latveria openly and don’t let anyone know that SHIELD is only six people, while Fury secretly conducts the real search. Cap reminds him that he refuses to be used….

The SHIELD team arrives in Latveria and while they are talking about the mission their jeep crashes into Red Hulk who announces he’s with the U.S. Government team ready to take the WMDs…and he threatens to smash anyone who gets in the way….

Captain America (2025 series) #6 Review by (January 21, 2026)

Review: Aaaand now we jump to the present day, having seen Cap rescued from the ice in the initial story arc of this title. We have the necessary but somewhat talky set-up by Fury. We’re brought up to date on the Sharon and Steve relationship, though that has never been a particularly interesting one. And SHIELD is back and Samuel L. Fury is in charge again, head of the information dump department. We meet some new characters, one of the three being mildly interesting. We have Cap beating up some guys for exercising their freedom to plot to take away everyone else’s freedom. Cap has doubts about everything. And there’s a last page reveal that was not hard to guess. It’s part one of a story arc so most of it is as simple as it’s ever going to get, laying the groundwork for the rest of the arc where the complications set in. A new art team supplies the mildly gritty look that has characterized Cap’s series for a while and they tend to be interchangeable. Not a complaint, just an observation that Marvel wants to maintain a certain look for Cap’s comics and they are succeeding. Nice issue—and it’s the first in the build-up to the upcoming ARMAGEDDON event but it’s too early to tell what that’s going to be.

But I have no idea what Ross in a red room signifies.

Comments: The comic is bannered “Armageddon assembles in five months.” Story set in the aftermath of ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM. SHIELD has been reorganized; it was shut down after the events of SECRET EMPIRE. Red Widow first appeared in AVENGERS (2018) #10. First appearance of Trevor Tambling, Joe Ramos, and Charles Castlemore; if they have code names, they are not revealed here.
