Fear Itself: Deadpool #1 Review by (September 6, 2023)

Review: Highly entertaining romp, though your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for the Merc with a Mouth. I can take him in small doses and this three-issue epic was ideal. Trust Deadpool to try to cash in on a world-wide disaster and have it blow up in his face. And minor villain Walrus was an ideal opponent, stupid and strong and is a great match for the addled antihero. And as a Baby Boomer, I enjoyed the Beatles puns, done with cleverness and restraint.

Comments: FEAR ITSELF tie-in. Marvel Database places this miniseries after FEAR ITSELF #2 but Comic Book Reading Orders places it after issue #3; doesn’t really matter much which way you go. Walrus (Hubert Carpenter) was introduced in DEFENDERS #131.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Fear Itself: Deadpool #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Deadpool explains to a couple how he installed security devices in all the rooms so that not even Juggernaut could break down the walls. Then Juggernaut, as Kuurth, Breaker of Stone, smashes in the wall and departs. As ‘Pool tries to cover it up before his clients, his workers, Larry and Marv, also depart, telling their boss they need to get to Cimarron, New Mexico, for another job. Deadpool sits down to rest and sees on television the Serpent’s magic hammers falling from the sky and being found by people like Juggernaut. Outside, Marv and Larry’s truck is blown up by a hand-held rocket, hurling debris all over—including a sledgehammer. The hammer gives Deadpool an idea; he picks it up and flees. A lycanthrope calls his boss to tell him the mission was a success. Larry and Marv decide to come back for the hammer later, after the police have gone….

At home, Deadpool searches through files of villains to find the one “worthy” of the now gaudily decorated hammer. He settles on the Walrus

…Hubert Carpenter a/k/a the Walrus now works backstage at monster truck rallies, readying the trucks for the show. After Hubert has okayed a truck, Roderick takes it out and the truck smashes up, releasing thousands of bees. Hubert dons his Walrus costume and heads to the locker room (observed by Deadpool) where he steals Roderick’s wallet, containing fifty-four dollars and a video rental card. He leaves the other lockers untouched and heads to the video store. Deadpool had located him by cross-indexing monster truck shows and video rental stores. Walrus sees the TV news about the magic hammers and fantasizes about owning one. ‘Pool soars overhead in a glider and drops the hammer with attached dynamite in Walrus’ path. Walrus finds the hammer and dashes home. ‘Pool crashes into a flock of ducks then hits a mountain, detonating his leftover dynamite….

In his apartment, Walrus marvels over the hammer but notes he doesn’t feel any different. He smashes the toilet with the hammer but rushes into the apartment next door to smash their toilet with his fist, indicating that he could do it without the hammer. Deadpool shows up wearing a creepy mask with a witch’s hat and cape; calling himself the Spectre of Mass Destruction, he tells Walrus he was chosen and persuades him that his powers will increase. They then head for Cimarron, New Mexico….

Larry and Marv return to the wreckage of their truck to find the hammer missing. The people of Cimarron, New Mexico, are marked for slaughter….
