Fear Itself: Deadpool #3 Review by (September 19, 2023)

Review: See issue #1 for full review.

Comments: FEAR ITSELF tie-in. Title is a pun on FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, a vampire film. Final appearance of the Society for the Advancement of Lycanthropic Kind and its leader Sir Lupos. First page is a reference to the Beatles’ “I am the Walrus,” specifically the lines, “I am the Eggman” and “Sitting on a cornflake waiting for the van to come,” with a nod to their “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.” Walrus cites the same song with “I am the Walrus, Goo goo ga joob.” Deadpool’s line, “The time has come, the Deadpool said, to speak of many things” is adapted from “The Walrus and the Carpenter” by Lewis Carroll, from Alice in Wonderland. He follows it with a reference to MC Hammer’s album “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em.” Deadpool’s line, “The Walrus was Paul,” is another Beatles reference, this time to “Glass Onion.”

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Fear Itself: Deadpool #3 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Walrus continues to attack Deadpool with the magic hammer that prevents the Merc from healing. He hides from his foe and dons the costume of the Spectre of Mass Destruction, coming out to tell him to stop hitting people and give back the hammer. But now Walrus recognizes the Spectre’s voice and continues beating him….

The werewolves arrive outside Cimarron but they detect the magic hammer that can remove their power to heal so they wait to see what develops….

Deadpool is so grievously wounded that he surrenders, tells the townsfolk it’s all over and he’s leaving. The little fangirl is certain it’s a trick. ‘Pool tries to hitch a ride and Larry and Marv, the werewolf hunters, drive up. From ‘Pool’s account, they realize the Walrus has the magic hammer designed to fight werewolves and they desperately need it to prevent the slaughter of the inhabitants of Cimarron. He joins the hunters and they drive back into the town and crash into Walrus, delighting the fangirl who feels her faith vindicated….

Walrus beats Deadpool to a pulp with the hammer until he gives up, disappointing the fangirl once again. He tells them they can keep the Confederate gold that’s in the sheriff’s office. The greedy Walrus dashes to the office but finds no gold there, just guns—and Deadpool grabs one and blasts Walrus. Then he takes the hammer and goes out to face the werewolves but finds them all gone. He returns the hammer to Larry and Marv and goes to pick up his pay but when the safe is opened, the gold is gone—stolen by the werewolves since that was their goal. ‘Pool tells the little girl he is joining Larry and Marv to hunt down the werewolves and recover the gold, though the two hunters do not want him along….
