Fear Itself: The Deep #1 Review by (April 26, 2022)

Review: FEAR ITSELF turned out to be one of my favorite Marvel big events and this tie-in limited series is one of my favorite episodes in that event. Big bad Attuma, finally scary after ditching the bunny ears, is made even more formidable by one of the Serpent’s hammers. He starts out by defeating Namor and the Atlanteans, sending Subby into a panic that he must eventually overcome. I think a little more could have been done with Namor’s fear and having to face it, though the story deals with the issue by adding more allies. All of which results in a new Defenders line-up, leading to an even bigger line-up. The battles are fierce and exciting. And, not being an X-Fan, I was previously unacquainted with Loa but now she is one of my favorite characters, spunky girl with the power to turn things to dust by passing through them, sort of like a Kitty Pryde who takes no prisoners. Lyra, Hulk’s daughter, fits in a little too easily as she is up for anything that involves violence. And Subby, Strange, and the Surfer are up to their same old tricks which is nice. As I said, I liked this little side-epic a lot.

Comments: This limited series takes place between FEAR ITSELF #4 and 5. First appearance of Aradnea. Issue includes a five-page preview of CAPTAIN AMERICA (2011 series) #1.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Fear Itself: The Deep #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Undersea conqueror Attuma has found one of the magic hammers and become Nerkkod, Breaker of Oceans, assaulting New Atlantis. Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner leads the defense against him but Namor is defeated and the city demolished; Loa helps the fearful Namor to escape to the surface world….

Doctor Strange comes to see Namor at a waterfront tavern where he learns of the disaster that has befallen Atlantis. Strange’s powers too are weaker; he casts a spell called Belial’s Beckoning, sending out tiny spirit figures to summon the Defenders….

In occupied New Atlantis, Nerkkod’s generals, Tyrak and Tiger Shark complain that their superpowered leader doesn’t need them. Tyrak’s sister Aradnea tells them that Namor will return with reinforcements and she will meet him with their allies….

Monsters assault the tavern but also arriving is Lyra the Savage She-Hulk, chosen by the summoners because of her similar genetic make-up to her father the Hulk. The sea monsters are related to the demonic Undying Ones so Strange warns his allies, Namor, Loa, and Lyra to be careful. The new Defenders hold their own until they are overwhelmed but then to the rescue comes the Silver Surfer….
