Silver Surfer Rebirth: Legacy #1 Review by (January 20, 2024)
This is the 3rd of 3 retro mini-series by Ron Marz set in the era when he was writing the Silver Surfer series and various apps by Legacy (his creation) and Thanos (on loan from Jim Starlin while he was concentrating on Warlock & Infinity Watch). Next issue will assemble them all.

Legacy, Adam Warlock, Gamora and Pip follow on directly from the 2nd mini-series Warlock: Rebirth. Silver Surfer follows directly from the 1st mini-series SS: Rebirth.

Goom's app comes between WLR#1 and his stint with Nick Fury's Howling Commandos.

Mephisto's disguised app at the end of WLR#5 has to be after his stuff in Infinity Crusade but the Marvel Chronology Project puts several apps in between, starting with Avengers West Coast #99-100 (including the death of (the Skrull replacement of) Mockingbird) and ending with Ghost Rider v3#39.

Captain Marvel's costume places him after his #17, and his glittery trail when flying means after #29. But apart from that the field is open for anywhen up to his death in Marvel Graphic Novel #1. We see no sign of him swapping bodies with Rick Jones, but that doesn't mean we can rule out that part of his life.
That's assuming it's not an alternate reality or something made up by Mephisto.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Silver Surfer Rebirth: Legacy #1 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
At the end of the Warlock: Rebirth mini-series Silver Surfer came to the Infinity Watch's base Monster Isle to ask help from visitor Legacy (Genis-Vell son of Captain Mar-Vell).

Now Surfer leads Legacy to a huge spacecraft which is nearing Earth, it's front a gaping maw of energy. He explains that the craft is an automatic weapon that has long outlived the civilisation that created it, and now it wanders through the universe destroying worlds - and Earth is next. The 2 warriors blast away the the behemoth knocking bits off it, but Genis points out that this will take them too long. SS replies that now it is near Earth it will charge up it's 'planet cannon' and they can use that energy against it. So saying he rides his cosmic surfboard into the mouth of the beast, and the death-machine is blown apart.

Surfer exits the conflagration unharmed. Legacy ask how he knew he would survive, and SS replies that he just hoped. As they watch the debris burn up in Earth's atmosphere Norrin Radd compliments Genis-Vell on his bravery, but the youth says he didn't do anything because it was Surfer who saved the day. His companion says it was enough that he answered the call to arms - his father would be proud. As they return to Earth Genis says he wished he'd known him.

They head back to Monster Isle, dodging a pterodactyl. Surfer suggests that there may be a way to grant his wish. Genis reminds him that Mar-Vell died of cancer (in the 1st of Marvel's Graphic Novel series). Norrin agrees that it would be unwise to try to change history but they could go back and witness some of it. He reminds him (and us) that Adam Warlock entrusted the Infinity Gems to the Watch, in particular giving the Time Gem to Gamora. Genis protests that Gamora herself refuses to *use* the Gem. Surfer agrees and says that's why she leaves it locked here in their castle. He detects that the Watch are currently absent so they could just 'borrow' the Gem for a trip. He promises to accompany the young man to make sure nothing bad happens. Genis admits he's tempted.

They enter Gamora's room and Genis uses his cosmic awareness to sense the gem's location in a box, but he doesn't know how to open it. Surfer's Power Cosmic does the trick, and Legacy reaches in to lift the Time Gem out. He hesitates but Norrin Radd urges him on. Genis says he's 'not comfortable' using it himself, so SS takes it and initiates the time journey for him.

Back in the past they see a large Kree Sentry robot hassling some aliens who Surfer explains are Badoon women and children fleeing a war. But the Kree consider it an invasion of their territory and the Sentry attacks them to either kill them or drive them off the world. Surfer stops Legacy interfering but then they see Captain Marvel zoom in to attack the robot. The Kree Captain tries pulling rank on the Kree Sentry but that doesn't work so he continues the fight until he pulls the robot's head off. Then he promises to keep the Badoon safe.

Genis knows he can't risk talking to his father but just seeing him being the selfless hero is inspiring enough. He suggests it's time to go. Surfer agrees, but says "But not quite where you expect". He is covered in fire which subsides to reveal Mephisto who says that the innocent are so easily tempted. And then he uses the Gem to send Legacy elsewhen, and gloats that his plan is working.

Back in the present and sometime later Goom sees the real Silver Surfer arrive on Monster Isle asking for Adam Warlock and saying he's worried about Genis-Vell. Warlock comes out of the castle and accuses him of returning to the scene of the crime. Surfer is puzzled and unprepared for Adam's attack, with Gamora and Pip The Troll behind him.
