Silver Surfer Rebirth: Legacy #2 Review by (January 20, 2024)
We've seen the Fallen One before in Thanos (2016) #15-17 set in a possible future. Thanos killed Galactus, and Silver Surfer swore a revenge which took millennia to prepare for. He became worthy of wielding Mjolnir and was also turned black by ingesting black matter (presumably what cosmologists call dark matter). Allied with the Annihilation Wave he attacked future King Thanos, who had also gathered allies:- his present-day self, the Rider (Punisher reborn as a Ghost Rider) and a captive Hulk. In the final battle the Fallen One was killed by King Thanos.
His appearance here is obviously before that final conflict.

This Fallen One is not to be confused with the same-named and coloured 1st Herald Of Galactus who was empowered by dark energy, 1st seen in Thanos (2003) #11 and killed in Annihilation: SS#4.
Also not to be confused with Elder Of The Universe called Champion who renamed himself Fallen One after losing a championship bout with She-Hulk in her (2004) #8.
Also not to be confused with the present-day Surfer whose shell was turned black at the end of the SS: Black mini-series.

Thanos is here immediately after Ron Marz' SS: Rebirth mini-series.

Vandoom's Monster is see in passing on Monster Isle. All 3 of these retro-series are set after Warlock & Infinity Watch #25. So I believe its app here is between its other apps in WIW#7 and Fantastic Four's (1998) Wizard ½ issue. It 1st showed up in #17 of the anthology comic Tales To Astonish.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Silver Surfer Rebirth: Legacy #2 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Last issue Mephisto  disguised as Silver Surfer tricked Legacy into stealing the Time Gem from the Infinity Watch so that he could go back in time to see his father Captain Marvel in action. But afterwards Mephisto revealed himself, took the Gem and sent Legacy careening through time. And back on Monster Isle the real Surfer turned up to face an angry Adam Warlock and friends.

Now we see Genis-Vell falling outside of time until he suddenly crashes through a barrier into reality on a barren asteroid where he's struck by Thor's hammer. Mjolnir then returns to its owner who turns out to be a black-shelled version of the Surfer.

On Monster Isle SS doesn't understand why Warlock, Gamora and Pip The Troll are attacking him and accusing him of stealing the Time Gem. He calls his cosmic surfboard to his side and fights back but only to stop the conflict so they can talk rationally. Angry Gamora clarifies that they know he and Legacy took the Gem. Surfer says it's impossible because he was galaxies away doing something heroic at the time. They insist that they saw him and Genis-Vell arrive and then went away on a mission. When they returned the Gem was gone and so were the duo. (Technically they also saw the duo leave on their *own* mission last issue, which makes their evidence even more circumstantial.)

Norrin Radd points out that they *know* him and know that such an action isn't his style. He suggests someone impersonated him, also fooling Genis - someone like the Skrulls. But in order to set them on the right track Mephisto now takes over Pip and boasts that it was him. He now has the Gem, and Genis is lost in time. Then he leaves Pip to feel sick. Adam says that without the Time Gem they have no way of finding Legacy. But Surfer says he has an idea - 1 they won't like.

In the other time Legacy protests that he doesn't want to fight his friend Surfer but he will if necessary. Surfer laughs at such bravado and names himself the Fallen One. Genis repeats that he doesn't want to fight and just wants to go back to his own time. But for some reason the FO takes his very presence here at the End Of All Things as a challenge and insists on starting a fight. During which he says that he knows how Genis' story ends (we do too) and he shouldn't be alive here. So saying he buries Legacy in asteroidal rock.

The next scene is the garden of Thanos where he's harvesting alien fruit. Surfer arrives asking for help, but the Titan says that their partnership (in the SS: Rebirth mini-series) is over. Norrin Radd reminds him that then *he* helped Thanos and now he wants help in return against Mephisto, and he describes the situation. Mention of his former 'lackey' (in the Infinity Gauntlet event) piques his interest a little bit but Thanos points out that he has fruit that needs harvesting and if Surfer was to help with that then he might have time for other things. Norrin finds it contradictory that the death-worshipper nurtures life but the Titan responds that there is no life without death, and he recommends farming to the skyrider. Then he takes his harvest inside and returns in his armour and with the Reality Gem.

Elsewhen Legacy blasts free of his 'tomb' and the fight resumes. He manages to blast the Fallen One off his surfboard but the board continues its flight to slam into Genis' chest. Then the FO strikes with Mjolnir and then prepares for a finishing blow.

Mephisto is watching all from his realm. He claims to have plans within plans within plans and they are all working. Soon the Silver Surfer will finally be his.
