Uncanny Origins (1996 series) #5 Review by (June 30, 2026)

Review: A retelling of Hulk’s famous origin for kids covers the same familiar bits, the only substantial addition is that we learn more about the dare that sent Rick Jones out to the testing ground. And to be honest, that was never a point I had any curiosity about. The big surprise is that there is no retconning here, aside from a mention of Bruce’s mean father. We get what we saw back in 1962: Hulk was originally gray and he transformed at night; all subsequent changes to the scenario are wrapped up in a couple of narrations on the last page, including Betty marrying Bruce eventually.

So…decent rehash of one of the most familiar Marvel stories, for a new generation.

Comments: Dedicated to the memory of Mark Gruenwald. Terry Kavenagh stepped in as editor when Gruenwald passed away. One of Marvel’s line of 99 cent books.
