Synopsis

Amazing Adventures (1970 series) #22 synopsis by reviewer T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars

Killraven and his Freemen are taking a boat down the Potomac River near Washington D.C. when a mutant monster rises from the water, capsizing their craft. They fight the monster bent on seizing prey and devouring it. Meanwhile, a band of outlaws called the Cavaliers, led by Sabre, are out to capture all of the survivors to sell in the slave market. But when they encounter Grok and Carmilla Frost, the mutant’s violent attacks persuade Sabre to retreat with the prisoners they have already captured. Meanwhile, Killraven and M’Shulla work together, attacking the monster at two vulnerable spots, finally killing it. Killraven questions Carmilla, suspecting she may have led them into a trap with her past service to the Martians making her allegiances look suspicious. But Grok snarls when Killraven sounds too hostile to his mistress so they move on….

As night falls, the group camps around the crumbling Washington Monument, Killraven plans to follow the Cavaliers and rescue their kidnapped comrades. Carmilla and M’Shulla talk, she explaining how she was assistant to her scientist father and when the Martians attacked, he was part of the resistance, and gave his life for the cause while she was employed as a microbiologist for the invaders, noting that such experiences make one hard; she confesses that she would like to be “soft” again…

…and then they are attacked by a green-skinned woman who uses a gun that fires silver stars. Killraven seizes her but she breaks his grip and warns them not to provoke her as she fires the gun, destroying M’Shulla’s crossbow. She is looking for the gang that abducted her band of Freewomen. Killraven and the woman, introducing herself as Mint Julep, form an uneasy alliance to recover their kidnapped comrades.…

They arrive at the Lincoln Memorial where the slave auction is held. They find a group of Martians bidding on human slaves, presided over by Abraxas, a bald pink-skinned giant with tentacles for arms. Sabre and his Cavaliers wait to one side, holding their captives ready for the bidding. The heroes dash in and free Hawk and Old Skull plus Mint’s Freewomen. Killraven and Sabre duel under Lincoln’s eyes, trading clever banter. Then Killraven is wrapped in one of Abraxas’ tentacles and he holds the captive rebel leader aloft before throwing him to the Martians….

Synopsis

By T Vernon
Rating: 3 stars
Synopsis: Scientist Martin has created a ray that will draw life in space to Earth. His partner York warns him that anything living in space would be adapted to space and so bringing it to Earth would be cruel. The ray attracts a semitransparent man to Martin and he spends five days trying to analyze and communicate with the alien. Late at night, York tries to destroy the machine, sending the alien back, but Martin catches him and overpowers him. When York awakens, Martin informs him that their fight caused the ray to focus deep underground and it attracted a being from within the Earth, one that creates ten foot deep footprints in the ground!

Amazing Adventures (1970 series) #22 Review by (September 4, 2026)
Comments: Part one of three parts. First appearance of Mint Julep. First appearance of the Cavaliers. First appearance of Abraxas. Gaspar Saladino lettered the first page.

Second story: Reprinted from JOURNEY INTO UNKNOWN WORLDS #56.

Review: And so we have a change of scene, moving us from NYC to Washington DC in a bid to keep the series fresh. And it works. Here we run into other bands of human rebels, good guys like Mint and her Freewomen, and bad like Sabre and his Cavaliers. So far Mint Julep seems like a formidable heroine so it’s odd that Killraven should think that is a silly name as he is likely unfamiliar with the famous drink from Kentucky. The issue ends with a slave auction, held in the memorial for the president who freed the slaves, contributing some easy irony to a battle scene.
