Amazing Adventures (1970 series) #21 synopsis by reviewer T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars

Killraven and his men have been taken to the biology lab where the hero is fighting off the guards intent on subduing him, as the Warlord and molecular biologist Carmilla Frost watch. Carmilla mocks the Warlord and his ineffective slaves before summoning her elite force, a band of large gray-skinned men. But Killraven holds his own against these new foes. The bitter Warlord recalls the difficulty in subduing and training the young Killraven when he was a gladiator and he jumps into the battle, beating the hero unconscious with his metal hand….

Killraven recovers while they are strapping him to a lab table while Warlord explains how the Martians are uncomfortable on Earth because of the stronger gravity and they are searching for a new form that will allow them to move easily about the conquered planet. Warlord tells Killraven how he is going to be subjected to experiments toward creating alternate bodies for the Martians. Killraven kicks him in the head. Carmilla Frost tells Warlord he is letting his desire for revenge warp his senses, that there are better uses for Killraven than guinea pig. Warlord insists he is too dangerous….

Down in the dungeon, M’Shulla is trying to break down the cell door with the other captive Freemen questioning his efforts. But M’Shulla is worried about Killraven….

Carmilla Frost heads to her lab to summon her pet Grok, clone of a mutant, resembling a gangly ape. She leads him through the halls and has him kill two guards so she can set the Freemen free to rescue Killraven…

…who is still strapped to a biochemical unit; he gets one hand free and clamps it on Warlord’s throat and squeezes until Warlord again punches him out with his metal fist and orders the doctor to torture Killraven with a surgical laser. Then the Freemen arrive, overpower the Warlord and his staff, and Carmilla orders Killraven to move and he resents being ordered about by a woman. She provides him with his armor and weapons, rescued along the way but Warlord strikes back, calling out all of the facility’s forces. The heroes pass through various tunnels coming up in Yankee Stadium, now featuring a chasm in the center with a narrow path passing over it into a metal cave, the sole exit. Killraven walks the narrow path alone, warning the other to stay back and when he reaches the metal cavern he is attacked by a giant crab-man that can shoot acid out of its antennae. The Freemen rush to his rescue with Hawk taking a spurt of acid to the face. More monsters emerge from the cave as Warlord shows up in the stands to gloat. The heroes battle monsters and Carmilla sends Grok to Killraven’s aid and working together they wound the crab monster and topple it from the path. So Warlord leaps into the arena and he and Killraven fight, rolling on the ground. Killraven pushes Warlord's metal arm into a puddle of acid and it dissolves, leaving Warlord traumatized at the loss of the arm a second time to Killraven. The hero leads his Freemen out of the stadium to take refuge in a subway station, vowing to return and make the stadium a place of relaxation once again….

Amazing Adventures (1970 series) #21 Review by (August 28, 2026)
Comments: Part two of two parts. Don McGregor takes over as the writer for the remainder of the series. First appearance of Carmilla Frost and Grok.

Review: Okay so we’ve got a regular writer, Don McGregor and here’s hoping the series takes off. So what do we have here? First we discover that the Martians have labs full of human scientists working on creating a new type of body adapted to Earth conditions for the alien Martians. This also implies the Martians are familiar with the Martian equivalent of brain transplants. And secondly we see Yankee Stadium has been retrofitted to serve as an arena for gladiator style games and so McGregor has the heroes fight monsters here because why invent the perfect place for a big battle and not put a battle there?

And we now have a female character added to the cast Carmilla…Wait! Another Frost? Marvel is full of them, right? Emma, Deacon, Whitney, and now Carmilla. She’s promising, an intelligent strong female character, who annoys Killraven by telling him what to do because he’s a macho bonehead in many ways. Grok comes with Carmilla and he’s a lot weirder, a tall skinny ape thing who works like a super-henchman to her.

The bad points of the story are a villain who is pure ranting stereotype, the art isn’t among Trimpe’s best but it serves its purpose, and Killraven seems to know about baseball, while McGregor compares him to Babe Ruth, invoking the famous “called shot.” This latter is actually a cool point, comparing Killraven to an American icon of the past, connecting him to the American saga. We’ll keep an eye out for more iconography.
