Synopsis

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #140 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Having captured Peter Parker last issue, the Jackal has the Grizzly take Peter to his portable lab. The Grizzly knocks Peter out once more and Jackal gets to work on a special operation stated to control Peter Parker forever! While he’s unconscious, Peter thinks about everything that led to this point, and eventually awakens, coming face to face with a concerned Ned and Betty! They tell him he’s in the lobby of the Daily Bugle building, and Peter admits that he can’t remember how he got there. They take Peter to a nearby coffee shop and while there, Peter notices something wrong with his arm! He heads to the bathroom and discovers that the Jackal placed a metal harness on his arm while he was unconscious! Suddenly, the Jackal’s voice emanates from the device, telling Peter that if he tries to remove the harness, it will vibrate until it destroys itself, and his arm with it! It’s designed to track Peter so the Jackal can know his every movement, hoping that it will eventually lead to discovering Spider-Man’s identity! Since the Jackal doesn’t know that Peter is Spider-Man, Peter realizes that this harness leaves him quite helpless!

Some hours later, Peter moves into his empty new apartment with Flash’s help. While they’re there, one of Peter’s neighbors from down the hall introduces herself as Glory Grant and invites them to stop by sometime. Later, Peter decides he needs to deal with the Jackal’s harness and heads to the college chemistry lab. Knowing how dangerous the Jackal and the Grizzly are, Peter determines that he may have to call the Jackal’s bluff. He uses an acetylene torch on the device until, after several agonizing moments, he’s finally able to remove it, and breathes a sigh of relief! With the device now removed, Spidey throws in the Hudson River and swings over to the Daily Bugle to see what Jameson knows about the Grizzly. He finds Jameson sleeping and quickly wakes him, demanding to know why the Grizzly tried to kill him (last issue). Jameson tells Spider-Man about how the Grizzly used to be a wrestler named Maxwell Markham. Concerned with how violent Markham was, Jameson wrote several editorials that eventually led to Markham losing his license.

Now knowing why the Grizzly is after Jameson, Spider-Man heads to the townhouse the Jackal had been using as a base to poke around. He inspects the place crawling on the ceiling but finds it completely cleared out. With one more lead to try, Spidey heads to the first gym he can find, hoping someone there remembers Markham from his time as a wrestler. He strikes paydirt, and the first guy he finds remembers that Markham used to train at a gym on 34th Street. Spidey heads there to find the Grizzly in the process of beating up his former friends that had testified against him. The Grizzly attacks Spider-Man, who fights smarter this time, using his webs to tear at the Grizzly’s suit, revealing the exoskeleton underneath that’s boosting his power. Spider-Man bounces all around the Grizzly, tearing bit by bit off until there’s nothing of his suit or exoskeleton left. Now just a sorry excuse for who he used to be, Spidey webs Markham to the wall and alerts the cops about where to find him, promising that someday he’ll get the Jackal too!

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #140 Review by (June 10, 2026)

Review: Part two of the Grizzly’s introduction has both him and the Jackal troubling Spidey. Though, the title ends up sounding much more dramatic than the issue actually entails. The Jackal fits Peter with a device on his arm to track him and learn Spider-Man’s identity, the weird part being that you’d think he would have found Peter’s costume while he was unconscious. It also doesn’t actually amount to much, yet, since Peter gets it off only a couple of pages later, though it does provide him a bit of grief. We’re also introduced to Glory Grant, Peter’s new neighbor down the hall! She never gets super important but is still another pretty cool addition to the supporting cast. We learn the Grizzly’s backstory as a former wrestler that Jameson got fired for being too violent (and who looks suspiciously similar to the Kangaroo without his costume). And, more in keeping with how he’s generally known, the Grizzly goes down like a wuss this issue once Spidey starts fighting smarter. Just tears his suit right off, easy peasy. Likely due to this, the Grizzly doesn’t legitimately appear again for nearly 15 years and mostly has his reputation as a joke villain after that. Another solid issue with some little oddities and coincidences, but still with all the elements that usually make Spider-Man so enjoyable.

Comments: The Grizzly’s backstory and name are revealed. First appearance of Glory Grant.
