The next day, Kyle is watching a TV soap opera when Yandroth’s recorder (actually just a head) bursts in and fires cellular displacement beams at him, translating him into the presence of the Omegatron where Yandroth who greets him with a bunch of talk about his superiority and his plans. Then the Hulk, Sub-Mariner, and Doctor Strange burst in, and Kyle pegs them as the original Defenders, indicating he has gone back in time. Yandroth explains that he once thought these Defenders were the ones with a destiny but has since learned that the true Defenders centers on Kyle Richmond. Yandroth transports Kyle back to a dark moment in his past when, while he was preparing for his career as Nighthawk, he struck a man with his truck, killing him. Then he sees that the dead man was Yandroth—and then he is returned to the Omegatron. Yandroth continues to bloviate, explaining how all time is one with him and Kyle is his pawn, which provokes Kyle to anger. To demonstrate his point, Yandroth conjures up monstrous versions of Nighthawk’s former teammates, Hyperion, Dr. Spectrum, and the Whizzer, and Kyle fights them; Yandroth is disappointed in Kyle’s performance. And then someone comes crashing through into this world: She-Hulk, Krang, Son of Satan, and a new Nighthawk (Joaquin Pennysworth)—the new Defenders….

Last Defenders, The (2008 series) #5 Review by (November 25, 2025)

Review: Son of Satan is right, Kyle Richmond has become a whiner. This issue is mostly Kyle moping about the defeats in issues 1-4 then suddenly being transported into the presence of insufferable Yandroth and then they clash, mostly with Yandroth messing with Kyle’s sense of self, time, and guilt, all the while chattering on and on about his own superiority. And it’s all pretty dull as Nighthawk a/k/a Fake Batman, was never all that interesting. And then, as a teaser for the concluding issue, we are presented with another weird combination of heroes as the Defenders. It’ll be over soon.

Comments: The incident with the apology note between She-Hulk and Tony Stark was in SHE-HULK (2005) #27. Letters by Richard Starkings, Comicraft, and Albert Deschenes.
