Rating: 3.5 stars

Sigurd Jarlson is convicted of Dario Agger’s murder and sentenced to thirty years in prison without parole. When he is released it’s into a totalitarian world with green skies. He is unable to obtain an apartment or a job on technicalities so he lives on the streets, begging; Odin, passing by, rebukes him for asking for help. Odin orders him to stand and look up; Sigurd stands and looks up to see the Midgard Serpent watching over all….

In the outside world, Odin shows the Serpent in the sky to Kris Seok and Lukki, explaining that Sigurd’s first trial was to face Thor’s enemies; this is his second trial, enduring Thor’s doom. Kris doesn’t understand any of this; Odin blames Lukki and orders him to tell her everything. Lukki reveals himself as Loki and touches Kris’ forehead and she does understand everything that is going on. Sigurd is the other side of Thor, what the Thunder God lacked but now Thor is dead and Sigurd is the only Thor now, a mortal Thor. Odin also reveals that Loki, equal to Thor, is most favored of his children, which surprises Lukki. Kris asks what they are going to do about Sigurd. Lukki says he is on his own but they can deal with the outer manifestation…but she’s not going to like it….

Mortal Thor, The (2025 series) #14 Review by (August 19, 2026)

Review: Story one: And now Sigurd has passed the second trial and escaped from the belly of the Midgard Serpent. Now he must go on a journey into mystery (nice use of the original title) and bring back Thor. Looks like this title will be heading in a more positive direction, Sigurd braving various obstacles on his heroic journey, culminating (we hope) in Thor returning to his own comic book, minus the bungee cord hammer.

Story two: A nice little meditation, almost in the form of a prose poem, seeing Thor from his hammer’s viewpoint. That precis makes it sound a bit silly but the story itself is not. It’s very nice. And it ends with possible the scariest appearance of Surtur yet.

Story three: An offbeat tale seems like a simple gritty murder mystery featuring a Norse god but the art by Jesse Lonergan is very unusual. It has a strong “Fantagraphics” vibe to it, simple cartoon faces in a multitude of tiny panels. It took me a moment to get into it, recognizing what was essential to the story and what was atmosphere. No problem, I just wonder where this is going and what is its relationship to the main Thor continuity. A return is promised in that last line so let’s wait and see.

Comments: Cover: “Thor #800.” Don Blake appears on the cover but not in the stories inside. The issue includes a tribute to writer/editor Ralph Macchio for his fifty years in comics.

The main story includes a text article by editor Wil Moss announcing that the next issue will be THOR #801, with some notes on where the series is going.

Ouroboros is the name of the symbol of a serpent swallowing its own tail, implying endless duration; it’s the situation the Midgard Serpent ends up in herein. Kris joins Beta Ray Bill and Dani Moonstar in possessing the Aesir-knowledge.

Worthy” is followed by an interview with creators Kieron Gillen and Declan Shalvey.

Deicide” features Monark Starstalker, a futuristic bounty hunter, introduced in MARVEL PREMIERE #32 (1976) who returned decades later in NOVA (2007) #29-30 then in WOLVERINE THE BEST THERE IS #7-12, then several of the cosmic titles. His home world is Earth-7643; he enters Earth-616 and chooses to stay in his second appearance.
