Synopsis

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #15 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Dr. Strange turns the Tarot card to select a new team of Secret Defenders. His own card turns up, causing him to reflect that the Fates possess a sense of humor. As he is tied up with the War of the Seven Spheres, another must lead the Secret Defenders. In his astral form, Strange invades the sanctum of Dr. Anthony Druid, controlling his mind and filling it with visions of the future to assume the mantle of leader of the Secret Defenders. Jillian Woods looks in on him and he snaps at her but she asks him to tell her what just happened. He has her change to her Shadowoman identity and he tells her about the Moebius Stone, broken into pieces eons ago by Agamotto himself. Dark forces have regathered all but two of the fragments and they must get those before the bad guys do. The first is in Chicago….

At a rough bar in Chicago, the sorceress Malachi enters and takes the burly denizens under her control and takes them to the Chicago Museum of Art to search for the Stone fragment. Hired to protect the museum, Luke Cage crashes through the wall to take on the bad guys. He is surprised that the thugs are stronger than they look, indicating some mysterious source of power behind them. As Cage grows concerned, suddenly Deadpool enters, chattering wildly and slaying the bad guys with his sword. Then Dr. Druid and Shadowoman arrive and Druid explains that he is the one who hired them. Druid locates the penultimate fragment of the Moebius Stone in the gem-encrusted hilt of a sword. But Malachi also turns up to claim the fragment. Druid’s attempt to hypnotize her fails; she casts a spell that makes the monsters in the various artworks come to life to fight the heroes. Malachi departs with the fragment and the heroes fight for their lives. And then they realize that Dr. Druid has deserted them….

At the Sanctum Sanctorum, Dr. Strange watches, noting that the Tarot Card portraying Druid is the Fool….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #15 Review by (July 8, 2025)

Review: A major change is in store for the series: Dr. Strange drops out because his own series is in turmoil, hiring Dr. Druid in his place. Now, Dr. Druid was one of the least likable of the Avengers in his brief tour with that team. And he is almost as insufferable here, snarling at Jillian for interrupting him, and bossing the others around but at least he isn’t undermining Captain Marvel’s authority as he did as an Avenger. So we can live with him for now. Luke Cage bursts through a wall and something is wrong: he is musclebound and looks stupid, not the Cage we’ve come to like over the years. Deadpool is still in his early career, chattering constantly but not yet the obnoxious character he would become. Shadowoman, a name to mess with Spellcheck, doesn’t really do much here other than to cut the hostile Druid some slack after he snarls at her. The plot is the standard “heroes and villains race to collect some sort of magical McGuffin” with an added helping of Deadpool. It gets darker next time.

Comments: Title is a play on the film title LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS (1970). For Strange’s current condition, we are referred to DOCTOR STRANGE, SORCERER SUPREME #48-49 for the War of the Seven Spheres. Shadowoman previously appeared in QUASAR #45-46, 50. First appearance of Malachi, which is a man’s name in the Bible, meaning “My messenger,” which has no significance here. Deadpool’s quote, “Ya doesn’t hafta call me Johnson” comes from a shtick by comedian Bill Saluga (1937-2023). Deadpool also invokes hot model Kathy Ireland, TWILIGHT ZONE host Rod Serling, Power Rangers, children’s TV series BARNEY & FRIENDS (1992-2010), and magician David Copperfield’s trick of making the Statue of Liberty vanish in 1983. Written by Tom Brevoort and Mike Kanterovich. The letters page includes one by noted letterhack David Peattie.
