Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #180 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Deep in the sewers, the King of a group of scarred homeless chooses a new queen after killing his previous one. He picks a pretty woman out of the crowd and names her as his new queen. Meanwhile, Daredevil interrupts Turk and a couple others running money for the Kingpin, his crutch and temporary cast on his foot not slowing him down at all. Later, at the Daily Bugle, Ben Urich works on developing the photos he took after weeks in the hospital following getting stabbed by Elektra. The shot of the homeless woman he took catches his attention, and he starts to suspect that he may know who she is. Urich and Daredevil head to the subway where Ben initially followed the woman, both of them suspecting that the woman is indeed Vanessa Fisk. They eventually find a pipe that leads further down into the sewers, and Daredevil hears human heartbeats down in that direction. He heads down and tells Urich to head home, but no sooner does Matt leave than Urich is grabbed by several scarred people!

Meanwhile, J. Jonah Jameson publicly retracts his paper’s statements about Randolph Cherryh, while the votes start to come in, Cherryh already leading. Foggy and Becky discuss the blow to the firm and what Cherryh getting elected could mean for the city. Back in the sewers, as Daredevil descends farther, he comes upon a homeless person who claims their leg was eaten by some kind of monster. Daredevil gives the urchin his crutch and advances through the sewers. He’s quickly found by a hoard of homeless and lets himself be carried off. Elsewhere, the Kingpin revels in his seemingly assured victory, as the votes continue to come in for Cherryh. He thanks Elektra for her contribution to this venture and plans to retain her services.

Daredevil is brought before the King of the sewer dwelling people and recognizes his queen as Vanessa. The King reveals he captured Urich too and he drops the two of them into the water to feed his beast. Daredevil realizes this must be the same monster he heard about earlier, as the two are attacked by a large crocodile! Daredevil breaks free and subdues the crocodile with his bonds while Urich heads for the surface. Daredevil soon emerges as well and takes on the King. After a brutal battle, Daredevil emerges victorious and the urchins all cheer him on as their new king. Later, Daredevil visits Kingpin, revealing he has Vanessa by presenting her wedding ring. In return for her, Daredevil forces Kingpin to have Cherryh drop out of the race, denying Fisk his puppet. Fisk decides that someone must die as retribution for this defeat and gives Elektra her next assignment: she must kill Foggy Nelson! To be continued!

Daredevil (1964 series) #180 Review by (April 16, 2025)

Review: This one is a little bit weird and disturbing. Daredevil heads down into the sewers to rescue Vanessa Fisk from a disgusting sewer King that resides there and has taken her as his queen. The King is a bit unlike anything else in Miller’s run, but is rather evocative of the mutant gang leader in Miller’s later famous Batman story, the Dark Knight Returns. The sewer King and his followers are all drawn with disturbing sores and welts all over and it’s pretty grisly to look at. Daredevil has a pretty intense fight with the King in a completely wordless sequence which are becoming the norm for Miller drawn fights, but the real cool part comes by rescuing Vanessa. He’s able to use Vanessa as leverage to get Kingpin to have Cherryh drop out of the mayoral race, tying up that plotline. This is especially cool as it’s the first real blow Daredevil’s dealt to Fisk’s operations, after constantly being two steps behind up until now. However, Kingpin decides to pay back this defeat by assigning Elektra to kill Foggy, setting up next issue, quite possibly the best, or at least most famous, issue of Daredevil of all time!

Comments: Takes place a couple weeks after last issue, enough time for both Daredevil and Urich to be treated for their injuries. Daredevil somehow even got a cast put on over his costume.
