Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #235 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 2.5 stars

Daredevil comes across a bunch of guys looting some paintings. He takes them out in his unique way until they’re begging to surrender. One of the guys says something that hits Daredevil hard. He claims he can tell that Daredevil has trapped himself in this life, and that he’ll never truly be free of it, since without Daredevil, he has nothing. Daredevil leaves the guys for the cops and ponders the man’s words, not wanting to ever go too far over the edge again. He’s trying to build a new life for himself, from the ashes of his old one, and determines not to let Daredevil consume too much of his life. After reminiscing about his origin, Daredevil heads to Josie’s looking for someone to hit. Elsewhere, Mr. Hyde is in the process of robbing an armored car. He takes out all of the guards and begins to escape with his loot, when a new squadron wielding SHIELD weapons arrives to deal with him. Hyde ducks around a corner and takes his serum to return to his human guise, but discovers it’s having no effect! Stuck as Hyde, he’s forced to contend with the new squadron before escaping, albeit without his loot.

Back at his laboratory, Mr. Hyde determines that his prolonged stints staying as Hyde has caused his genetic code to change so much that his human side may cease to exist! He works tirelessly on his serum to try and make a new version, wanting the choice of existing as either a monster or a man! Not far away outside, Daredevil tracks down Hyde after hearing of his earlier heist, pinpointing his exact location with his senses. Daredevil perches outside Hyde’s skylight as Hyde finally discovers a serum that will work! However, he realizes that this serum will make the change irreversible, and he’ll be stuck as a human forever! Deciding that it’s worth it, he’s about to drink his potion, when Daredevil comes crashing in. Daredevil’s arrival makes Hyde realize he has too many enemies and thanks Daredevil for saving him from making a terrible mistake!

Hyde attacks Daredevil who fights back as best he can. Their battle destroys most of the room, until Daredevil gets knocked out of the window. Daredevil saves himself from his fall but pretends to be hurt in order to get Hyde to follow him. He leads Hyde to a nearby courthouse and shuts off the lights. Hyde continues to destroy everything in his path and with his rage at a maximum, Daredevil heads for the final part of his plan. Daredevil leads Hyde down into the subway and with him too angry to think straight, Daredevil is able to snag Hyde with his billy club and trick him into electrocuting himself on the subway’s third rail! With Hyde defeated, Daredevil thinks about how only being Daredevil would leave him just as much a monster as Hyde! Later, Matt meets up with Karen for a stroll, when they’re approached by a guy named Stinky McQuade. Matt recognizes him as one of the kids who used to pick on him when he was young, and McQuade admits that Matt inspired him to make something of himself. He apologizes for his past behavior and tells Matt it was never personal, leaving Matt to ponder his impact with Karen.

Daredevil (1964 series) #235 Review by (May 13, 2026)

Review: Yet another just “okay” issue with the return of Mr. Hyde. Unlike last issue, this one at least alludes to Born Again, with Daredevil stating he’s trying to build a new life from the ashes of his old one. It’s a natural progression, and kind of the point of Born Again, but the way it’s worded, it feels like guest writer Danny Fingeroth was only given the vaguest of overviews of the story, making it sound like he just got too obsessed and had a minor breakdown. There’s kind of a parallel with Hyde, if you squint, who debates whether he wants to live as a monster permanently or not, but the comparison is rather murky and forced. Steve Ditko guest pencils again, and with an inker that better compliments his style, it certainly looks a lot more Ditko, though this is far from his best work. The action in particular comes off very stilted and unimpressive (and oh so 60s). The oddest bit, the final page presents a truly random scene where Matt runs into one of the kids that used to pick on him when he was young (something they seemed to love doing during this period). This is the third time in like 30 issues that a guest writer has done this idea, though more positively this time. The scene doesn’t really amount to anything or have anything to do with the rest of the issue. Not only that, the art looks completely different from the rest of the issue, but I can’t find anything online to suggest that it’s a separate artist! Weird. Overall, a pretty mediocre issue in every regard.

Comments: Matt runs into “Stinky” McQuade, who reveals he’s the one who gave Matt the nickname Daredevil when he was a kid.
