Synopsis

Last Defenders, The (2008 series) #2 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Tony Stark, Director of SHIELD, calls the Defenders a disaster for their handling of the Quetzalcoatl incident, which resulted in the team attempting several different but useless methods of fighting a giant serpent, wrecking Trump and Caesars hotels before the monster went down. So Stark shuts them down, hoping to keep the incident contained in the press and perhaps revisiting the idea of the team in a year or so. Nighthawk stands by helpless as Colossus and Blazing Skull depart, while She-Hulk chases Stark to argue with him. His decision remains….

In 1973, Yandroth met with Daimon Hellstrom to inform him that his powers would be of greater use in an undefined future with colleagues he hasn’t yet met. Hellstrom found Yandroth’s pretentious and portentous chatter about future importance and significance annoying and walked out….

Last Defenders, The (2008 series) #2 Review by (November 5, 2025)

Review: Here we are on issue #2 and our heroes are a bunch of screw-ups, comically so. Half the team walks out and the other half tries to salvage things by undertaking an unauthorized mission to rescue Joaquin Pennysworth. But Pennysworth has the situation in hand and the heroes are just interfering with his plans. And for a surprise ending, we see the Madbomb again, making a comeback from the American Bicentennial. Again, a heavily comedic story celebrating chaos where chaos is a liability. Cheer Chadwick hasn’t much to do but her name gives her away as a Jack Kirby character.  And everyone still has a big chin.

Comments: Colossus next appears in UNCANNY X-MEN #495. Cheer Chadwick was a member the Elite, involved in various subversive activities; previous appearances were in CAPTAIN AMERICA #195-197 and THUNDERBOLTS #31-32. The Madbomb was previously seen in CAPTAIN AMERICA #193-200. Plot by Keith Giffen and Joe Casey. Issue includes a one-page character profile of Nighthawk (Sean McQuaid, writer, Brett Breeding, Sam Grainger, artists).
