Synopsis

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #9 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

At his Sanctum Sanctorum, Doctor Strange receives a visit from the Silver Surfer. SS explains that he has some unfinished business and needs Strange’s help. The problem is Nebula, the space pirate who SS has encountered several times. Well, she has escaped from her latest prison and is assembling an army on Phobos, Mars’ moon, seeking revenge against her enemies’ planet Titan. But Surfer doesn’t want Strange to join him as he is already known to Nebula and she can take advantage of his fatal flaw. His allies must be someone Nebula does not know. Strange asks for a little time…

…and introduces Surfer, not to Thor and Iron Man, but to Thunderstrike and War Machine. With the situation explained, Strange transports the trio of heroes to Phobos where they are immediately caught up in battle with Nebula’s forces. Silver Surfer leaves the other two to fight the hordes while he goes to find Nebula. Arriving at her flagship, he is immediately shot by her henchman Geatar with a synaptic disruptor, rendering him helpless.

War Machine and Thunderstrike fight monsters for a while then decide to catch up with the Surfer. They arrive at the flagship to discover SS chained to a fusion-reaction bomb ready to be launched at Titan. And to keep the two interlopers busy, she brings out her giant monster lieutenants Kurg and Kruk, whose nerve endings have been cauterized, so they feel no pain….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #9 Review by (June 10, 2025)

Review: Ron Marz takes over as writer with this issue and first we have Thunderstrike, one of his co-creations and then a switch from a magical milieu to a heavy science fiction one. Want proof? Dr. Strange, lynchpin of the series, stays home while the guest characters do the heavy lifting. The plot is simple, straightforward and makes great use of the bad guys, scheming Nebula, faithful Geater, and the two really big guys. There’s the writing; a word on the impressive art next issue.

Comments: Part one of two parts. Nebula was imprisoned on Titan in SILVER SURFER ANNUAL #5, escaped in SILVER SURFER #67-74, and escaped from another penal colony in SS #77-18. Story is set right after THUNDERSTRIKE #3, explaining why Rhodey is giving him advice about his “promising career.” For War Machine this is right after he has taken on the new identity in IRON MAN #291. And both Eric and Rhodey had served a long term as replacements for their respective forebears, Thor and Iron Man.
