Synopsis

Black Widow (2014 series) #12 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Newscaster Anderson Cooper presents an episode of his television series on an expose of Black Widow, who works with the Avengers and SHIELD but is responsible for numerous killings and a great deal of property damage yet who seems to be unaccountable. Natasha’s friends and teammates are fixated on the show. Maria Hill is fielding calls from the President. Witnesses are interviewed about terror caused by Natasha on city streets and rumors that she engineered a prison break in Latin America (see issue #3). A battered Isaiah Ross watches on television then receives a call from Maria Hill. Hill contacts all of the superheroes connected to SHIELD advising them to keep silent about Black Widow. Tony Stark points out that Cooper’s report wasn’t unfair. Hill responds that that’s why it’s a real problem….

While the world is watching Cooper’s show, the Black Widow herself is on a secret mission in Somalia with the Howling Commandos. They enter a war zone, use a drone to take down various enemy soldiers and rescue their target, a kidnapped journalist named Uri. Word comes that two enemy copters are one the way. Nat and a Howler banter while shooting them down. On her way back to the USA, still unaware of what’s been going on, she receives a call from Isaiah Ross, warning her of the show and offering to go to her apartment and prepare for her to go into hiding….

Black Widow (2014 series) #12 Review by (October 14, 2025)

Review: What happens when a secret agent is no longer secret? Black Widow is in that very position and the world is in an uproar. Irony is the theme of this issue because our protagonist is unaware of all of this, her innocent narration carrying us through the mission in Somalia which she enjoys because it’s a good clean fight; the sequence is tinted midnight blue. And she judges it a good day, before she walks into a crime scene at home.

Comments: Part one of six parts. Anderson Cooper (1967- ) is a real-life news anchor who hosts a show called ANDERSON COOPER (AC) 360. This Howling Commandos is a private military company formed after SHIELD was compromised during the Secret Invasion; they were first seen in SECRET WARRIORS #3-4; this is their only appearance outside of that title and their last to date (2025). Seen in single panel cameos watching Cooper’s show are Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Captain America (Sam Wilson), Winter Soldier, the Punisher, Matt Murdock, Tori Raven, X-23.
