Story Name:

Cap and the Howlers Together Again!

Synopsis

Captain America #273 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Captain America is an honored guest at the reunion of Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos. When their former commanding officer, General "Happy Sam" Sawyer arrives outside, he is kidnapped by a Hydra hit squad. Cap sees this through the window and leaps into action; while he fights the Hydra goons, Sawyer is lifted away by a helicopter. As Cap and the Howlers plan to interrogate the captured agents, they are suddenly blown to bits by their strict leader. As he was taken away, Sawyer told Cap there was something inside his hat as it fell to the ground. Inside they find microfilm describing General Sawyer, Grand Forks Air Force Base, and the Pacific fault-line. Cap heads to the rescue with Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, and Gabe Jones, the only three former Howlers who are active SHIELD Agents….

At the Air Force Base in North Dakota, a traitorous General Sawyer enters and seizes control for Hydra; they are there to hijack the SAC Aerial Command Center which would give them control of America’s nuclear weapons. Cap and the guys arrive but are almost immediately captured by the enemy. The remaining Howlers of course have followed them and they stage an assault on the airbase. In the melee that follows, Sawyer is revealed to be a robot double, and the Supreme Hydra is unmasked as Baron Strucker who zaps Cap with an electric shock and the Hydra gang slips into the SAC plane and gets away. Captain America vows to stop Strucker’s mad scheme….

Review / Commentaries

Captain America #273 Review by (October 17, 2014)
Review: Enjoyable reunion issue for the Howling Commandos, though I wonder how many Marvel fans, even in 1982, were familiar with the 1960s comic book. As the years go by more and more readers only know them from later appearances. Pity, they were cool. Anyway, Mike Zeck provides a lot of fight scenes and guest writer David Kraft can now write a decent patriotic speech for Cap that doesn’t sound like a self-parody (see above #265-266). Nothing hefty but we needed a break from the previous issue.

Comments: Part one of two parts. Cap is introduced to Eric Koenig, overlooking Koenig’s previous appearances in CAP #145-146 and #188-190 and his being a SHIELD agent.
