War on Micah Synn II: The Blindness Men Wish For

Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #213 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Professor Horatio Piper stares up in fascination at the large statue of Mow and the spike trap that nearly killed Becky just days earlier. He tells Micah Synn that he’s set up an interview for the following day. On his way out, Debbie tries to get Piper’s attention from another room but she’s pulled back inside. Piper chooses to turn a blind eye to what’s right in front of him, as Synn confirms with the Vikah that a trap they set for Daredevil is ready to proceed. At that moment, Daredevil scopes out an abandoned subway station, his radar sense alerting him to four of Synn’s men waiting in the station, with one hidden in the bushes nearby. Daredevil had heard from one of Kingpin’s informants that the Kingorge would be there with evidence of their criminal activity. Knowing it’s a trap, Daredevil jumps down the hole into the station and encounters the men. He hits the lights, giving him more of an advantage, and takes out the four Kingorge, when the last drops a torch into the hole, setting the whole place ablaze!

Daredevil is able to wrap his swingline around a lamp post up top to haul the four Kingorge men out of the fire. The final one flees and ends up being stopped by the Kingpin. Daredevil relays that there was no evidence after all, and it ends up being reported that Synn’s men were led there and framed by the Kingpin! Back at his penthouse, Micah Synn waxes about the usefulness of lying, while Debbie is made to scrub the floors. Debbie tries talking with Micah’s remaining wife M’Lee about her situation. She claims she eventually found Foggy boring, and was attracted to Micah because he’s everything that Foggy isn’t. She thinks she’s bonding a bit with M’Lee who doesn’t register a thing she said and dumps the bucket of water on her head. Meanwhile, Piper walks with his colleague, happy about the $10,000 advance check he got for the book he plans to write on Micah and the Kingorge. They end up walking by a crime in progress and Piper’s friend ends up getting shot and killed!

Piper walks back to his apartment, depressed, where Daredevil is waiting for him. Daredevil warns him not to continue blinding himself to the evil Micah Synn has been committing, telling him that he’s better than that. Daredevil reports back to the Kingpin, unsure if his pep talk for Piper was effective but figured it was worth a shot. As he leaves, he overhears Kingpin discussing plans to take him out as soon as things with Synn are finished! Daredevil’s words ended up hitting home, as Piper sets a fire as a distraction at Micah’s penthouse, and gives Debbie the key to escape out of the back stairwell. She runs back to Foggy, telling him everything that happened, and what a fool she’s been. Not long after, Matt arrives back at the office, where Becky tells him that Synn’s restraining order against Daredevil is going to be lifted! Debbie told everyone what happened, painting Micah Synn as the criminal he is, and Foggy went to give Micah a piece of his mind. Knowing how dangerous Synn is, Matt rushes out to reach Synn’s penthouse as soon as possible.

At Synn’s penthouse, Micah finds Piper’s burnt check as the cause of the fire. He chases Piper, knowing he was the perpetrator. Piper ends up getting blocked off by Synn’s men, and ends up running right under the spike trap that was to be used for the sacrifice, and is killed when it falls on top of him! Foggy gets there just after and discovers the scene. Daredevil rushes in and stops the Kingorge from killing Foggy. He takes them all out, including the Vikah, while demanding to know where Micah Synn ran off to. Foggy points out that the Vikah is mute and that they won’t learn anything from him. The two of them mourn Professor Piper, while Daredevil points out that his death will at least be something that they can pin on Synn and his men, and reinforcing that in the end, Piper proved that he was better than all of them! To be concluded!

Daredevil (1964 series) #213 Review by (December 31, 2025)

Review: The war on Micah Synn is nearing its end! This issue perfectly encapsulates the saying that the only thing needed for evil to prevail is for good men to stand by and do nothing. It’s demonstrated most by Professor Piper, the man that found Micah and the Kingorge in the first place. He had been turning a blind eye to Synn’s evil because his discovery brought him fame and notoriety. Eventually though, Piper couldn’t outrun his conscience and ends up dying after saving Debbie, with his death finally serving as something concrete to pin on Synn. I suppose this could account for Synn’s continued protection up to this point, those lying on his behalf and keeping themselves willfully ignorant to what was going on around them. I suppose this serves to enhance the metaphor that Micah Synn represents, the embodiment of trendy sin (hence the oh-so-subtle name). People were ignoring Synn as long as it benefitted them, allowing him to feed and grow, presented literally by his habit of constantly gorging on food over the last several issues. He’s actually been drawn a little heavier with each issue, which is a nice touch from Mazzucchelli. While it’s not a terribly done metaphor, it’s also not as clever as O’Neil seems to think it is. It does bring a little bit more of a point to this storyline that was sorely lacking one, which gives it points, even if it still isn’t my favorite.

Comments: Part two of the War on Micah Synn. Death of Horatio Piper.
