Incredible Hulk #5 Review by (November 13, 2018)

Review: Doctor Doom is the master of the last page reveal; here's he's moved up to the title page! He adds a darker dimension to an already dark tale but also leavens the story with some sardonic humor. Humor of a more, er, basic sort was provided by the little monkey who throws crap; it's a little low but it's what monkeys do, okay? The most bizarre bit was the psychological torture of Mister Gor a/k/a Igor, henchman to Dr. Frankenstein; for some reason he looks less creepy in Whilce Portacio's art, and Commander Doom might have the hots for him too—at least until he started crying. Really cool.

Comments: Classic line from Hulk: “Just when you think things can't get any worse...you get hit in the face with radioactive monkey crap.” Inks are credited to Allen Martinez, Rick Ketcham, and Scott Hanna; colors to Arif Prianto, Benny Maulana, and Veronica Gandini.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Incredible Hulk #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Then: we see how Hulk approached Doctor Doom, wanting to have himself split off from Bruce Banner; Doom agreed, mentioning dire consequences if Hulk doesn't keep his (unrevealed) part of the bargain....

Now: The Mad Squad has discovered Hulk, semi-conscious in a crater; Amanda von Doom (no relation), Mr. Gor, and BRAIN are fighting off Bruce Banner's minions. Hulk is swallowed by a giant python but Hulk tears his way out and stands facing the assembled monsters. Doom and the others take the opportunity to go after Banner while Hulk easily convinces the creatures that they are slaves and can revolt. Hulk leads them toward the lab, they are met by Banner's mute monkey mascot—who threatens to kill Hulk if he does not submit to “Father,” demonstrating that he can transform on the spot into a huge gorilla-like monster. Then the Mad Squad runs into Banner....

Then: Doctor Doom operated on Hulk, who refused to be anesthetized, by unleashing an adamantium chainsaw (“Try not to move.”)....

Now: The monkey battles Hulk by hitting him as the gorilla then shrinking to dodge any reprisal; he then hurls his dung into Hulk's face. Hulk picks up a tree as a weapon....

Banner swiftly examines the cyborg BRAIN, guesses its access codes based on its design and reprograms it to attack Commander Doom. Banner then plays psychological games with Mister Gor, hitting on his history of betrayal and his attraction to Ms Doom....

Then: As Doom operated, he asked if Hulk wanted any adjustments made to their personalities; Hulk declined, asking merely that the two be separated into their component parts. Doom grew a new body to house Banner's brain and everything was successful. Now Doom brings up his fee....

Now: The monkey is seized by the other animal-men and held so Hulk can continue to hunt Banner....

Commander Doom kills BRAIN and shames Gor into ending his crying and they head to the lab where Doom intends to trigger the gamma bomb....

Banner and Hulk meet again and resume their battle....
