Thor #30 Review by (January 25, 2023)

Review: Very exciting issue, with another echo of that long-ago battle, the advent of the draugrs, familiar to video-game players but not so much to Marvelites (though they are just more zombies, the most overused monster of the last couple of decades), and a battle over a secret door. All very cool. But we close with the arrival of the master of the last-page reveal: Doctor Doom, which pushes the story in a direction the revelation of what was behind the door would not have. We’ll see it all next time. I hope, I hope.

Comments: The draugrs are undead, actual creatures from Norse mythology; while new to Marvel Comics, they have appeared in THE ELDER SCROLLS and GOD OF WAR video game series. Issue includes a tribute to the late Carlos Pacheco, penciler for Marvel and DC. In place of a letters page, a sneak peek at some of the artwork from the next issue is offered.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #30 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In a cave in a forbidden section of Niffleheim, Thor and Runa see the long-ago battle that left the land a frozen graveyard. The Valkyries balked at Bor’s orders but he commanded them with threats and so they joined the battle against the stranger we know as Thanos. It ended with a volcanic eruption and the apparent death of Thanos. It is a time echo and the two hurry on….

At the sealed door, Corvus Glaive is trying to open it with the blood of Bor, obtained by cutting the arm of Bor’s granddaughter Laussa, kidnapped for this purpose. It isn’t working and Laussa knows why but she’s not telling the villain….

Thor and Runa encounter a school of goldfish-type creatures, swimming through the air. They are attacked by the undead Draugrs who feed on the fish, which are memories. The two heroes fight their way through the horde of monsters. Runa explains how Bor’s sorcerers harnessed the souls of the dead to put them to a greater purpose. The two pass a mirror and neither likes what they see around them. They come upon Corvus Glaive trying to force open the doors with his eponymous weapon and that isn’t working either. Outside the volcano has come to life and is erupting. While Runa holds off the Draugrs, Thor battles Glaive; the God of Thunder unleashes dogs made of lightning, a power he did not know he had. Against Thor’s wishes, the dogs tear Glaive apart, releasing his screaming soul. Thor has Runa take the child to safety while he must see what is behind the door, against the pleas of Odin in Mjolnir. Thor slashes his arm, Bor’s blood is spilled, and the doors open. What Thor sees is a shock….

And an insect had been following Thor is revealed to be a mechanical messenger and it reports back to its master, Doctor Doom….
