Story Name:

Prophecy

Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #215 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

In some mysterious time, a prophecy is made by an Apache mystic that two red-haired heroes will come to help return the land to the Apache, though they live a century apart, they will end up acting as one! 100 years ago, in Arizona, the Two-Gun Kid comes across a couple of Native American men being accosted by some gunmen. He drives off the gunmen, but one of the Apache men ends up dying from his wounds. The other reveals that the gunmen were after a map he has that apparently points to the location of a deed signed by President Arthur proclaiming the land as belonging to the Apache tribe. It was hidden after the soldier tasked with getting it to the Governor fell ill. The Two-Gun Kid rides with the man back to town where the sheriff reluctantly places the young Apache in jail due to the accusation of one of the earlier gunman named Keeno. The Two-Gun Kid promises he’ll get it sorted out and the next day, in his civilian guise as lawyer Matt Hawk, he’s able to poke enough holes in Keeno’s testimony to get the Apache man exonerated.

Later, they follow the map to a cave where the deed is supposedly buried but end up finding nothing. While they’re searching the cave, Keeno and his men arrive and use dynamite to seal off the entrance, trapping the Two-Kid Gun and his companion inside! The Two-Kid Gun locates another narrow exit but before they leave, feels an instinctive urge he can’t explain to leave a message of sorts in the cave wall. Outside, the Two-Gun Kid confronts Keeno and his men, who want to prevent the deed from being found so they can keep the land. The Two-Gun Kid disarms Keeno and his men and scares them off but laments that the deed seems forever lost…

In the present day, Matt Murdock awakens, having experienced the Two-Gun Kid’s adventure as a strange, vivid dream. He heads to the office where he finds Foggy, who admits that things aren’t going so well with trying to patch things up with Debbie after the whole Micah Synn fiasco. They’re then visited by a man named Keeno, which Matt recognizes as the same name from his dream! Mr. Keeno enlists their services to help with a land dispute between himself and the Apache tribe. Realizing things are eerily similar to his dream, Matt feels compelled to fly out to Arizona to investigate. As soon as he lands, he’s approached by a young Apache man named Timmy Red Moon. Timmy offers to drive Matt to his hotel and on the way, explains how Keeno and his family have been cheating his people out of their land for a century. Now, Keeno is building a dam that will ruin the ecosystem and local wildlife. Timmy wants Matt to simply not help Keeno, but Matt says his job is to serve the interests of his client.

Later, Matt is mulling things over when he hears Timmy getting mugged by two men outside. He heads out as Daredevil and takes care of the two men, who it turns out had been sent by Keeno. This convinces Daredevil to help Timmy and, following the logic of his dream, discovers that Timmy has the map of the deed’s whereabouts that’s been passed down through his family for generations. Daredevil feels the map and discovers a secret about it: the real directions to the deed were scratched into the leather, hidden by the fake ones drawn on. They follow these directions and find the buried deed, when suddenly they’re pinned down by Keeno and his men, who had been tracking Timmy. Daredevil and Timmy take refuge in the cave and Keeno seals them inside, just like was done a century ago. Following his dream, Daredevil finds the message in the wall left by the Two-Gun Kid, as well as the way out, which he ends up having to swim through. Eventually, Daredevil makes it out and confronts Keeno and his men, perfectly mirroring the Two-Gun Kid from a century before. He takes Keeno down and regards the Two-Gun Kid’s message, a bullet with the word “Howdy” scratched into it.

As night approaches, Daredevil can almost feel in the air the thanks from those long dead as this century long caper comes to a close.

Daredevil (1964 series) #215 Review by (January 14, 2026)

Review: Daredevil and the Two-Gun Kid both investigate the same case a century apart! This made a for a very unconventional Daredevil story. The first half presents a land dispute case begun by the Two-Gun Kid 100 years ago that Daredevil experiences as a dream and ends up following up on after the descendants of those involved come to him in the modern day. Daredevil’s experiences end up mirroring Two-Gun Kid’s almost exactly, painted as a weird fate, prophecy, instinctive connection type thing. Two-Gun Kid feels compelled to leave a message that Daredevil finds in the present day, Daredevil feels compelled to investigate, things like that. As a result, they end up working together in a way to help reclaim the land for the Apache Natives, despite never actually meeting. It should also be noted that since everyone else involved in Daredevil’s section is a descendant of someone from Two-Gun Kid’s section, in addition to them both being red-haired lawyers named Matt, there’s an ambiguous implication that Daredevil might be a descendant of the Two-Gun Kid (though I don’t believe this is ever alluded to again). It’s a pretty different kind of Daredevil story but I still kind of enjoyed it. The story is simple and the art is great with the Old West sections much more photo-realistic (and in sepia tone!). Nothing too special but it certainly stands out!

Comments: The Two-Gun Kid’s first and only appearance in a Daredevil comic. Chester Arthur being President places the Two-Gun Kid section between September 1881 and March 1885, which lines up with 100 years before this issue was published.
