Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #10 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

In Asgard, conquered by the Dark GodsTokkots has just informed Perrikus that Thor is alive and on Earth. Perrikus has Adva open the Continuum Gateway for him so he can search for his foe. He thinks he sees Thor but for only a second…

…because Thor has just transformed back to his Jake Olson persona. Marnot appears to him, warning him not to endanger Jake Olson’s body but Jake/Thor responds that he must make excuses for Jake then return to the business of liberating Asgard. Jake enters the hospital to give hasty notice to Demitrius Collins and Hannah Fairmont that he will be gone for a while. Detective Brady O’Neil arrives to talk to Hannah about the thefts from the hospital pharmacy….

In Asgard, Majeston Zelia of the Dark Gods scolds Odin for denying that Thor lives; Odin himself did not know. Zelia commands Perrikus to bait a trap for the God of Thunder. At the hospital, Jake (literally) runs into Dr. Jane Foster and he makes up an excuse about a family emergency. She suspects he is Thor and mentions the robot Thor fought earlier and Jake instinctively says, “Replicus.” Marnot whispers to Jake to be careful but suddenly the giant image of Perrikus appears in the sky, challenging Thor to battle. As a threat, Perrikus holds up the battered person of Lady Sif. Jake runs off just as Demitrius and Hannah come outside looking for him. Jane, now certain that Jake is Thor, mentions the family emergency and asks Hannah to join her for a coffee and tell her about Jake Olson….

Thor uses Mjolnir to create a vortex transporting him to the Rainbow Bridge. He is stunned at the horror the Golden Realm has become under the Dark Gods. A ghostly hand beckons him through the wastes until he reaches his enemies, standing before Odin, chained to the massive machine, Balder and Sif shackled at his feet. Perrikus challenges Thor and hurls an energy blast at him; Thor fights his way through the beam and strikes his enemy down. Perrikus then fires a barrage of darts at Thor who responds with an anti-energy blast from Mjolnir but it fails to harm Perrikus. Thor hurls Mjolnir and Perrikus swipes his scythe and slices the mighty hammer in two. The destruction of Mjolnir shocks and terrifies Thor. As the two fight with fists, the countdown begins: being parted from Mjolnir for sixty seconds will force Thor to transform back to Jake Olson. To protect his human form, the battered Thor crawls into a drainage conduit where he becomes Jake once more. Majeston Zelia laughs while Perrikus demands Thor come out and face him….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #10 Review by (June 18, 2025)

Review: Once we get past that cover where Thor looks like he can’t find Perrikus who is standing right behind him, a very nice epic begins. Thor finally faces the big bad guys that have been hovering in the background of his comic for a decent number of issues, allowing them to build into a threat but not taking so long as to allow us to lose interest. And I find the design of the Dark Gods to be quite interesting, JRJR shows some Frank Miller/DKR influence; these aren’t the usual big strong mean guys (Perrikus aside) but a truly alien band of baddies. And as Thor steps into their eerie world, he changes too, looking lost in the alien landscape which was once his home. Pretty cool three-part story.

Comments: The thefts from the hospital pharmacy were mentioned back in issue #5. Colorists are Gregory Wright and Kevin Somers. The lettering is split between Richard Starkings, Comicraft, and Wes Abbott.
