The Work of Odin

Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #13 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

With the defeat of the Dark Gods, Odin calls for celebration throughout the realm of Asgard. And Thor is hailed as the hero of the day, his name ringing out through the realm. Even Hogun the Grim is glad. Hercules chats with Preston Case inhabiting the Destroyer, telling him to loosen up and have a good time. Odin offers to grant any wish that Thor desires as a reward and Thor requests that Asgard be repaired and cleansed of the stain of evil brought by the Dark Gods. Odin then has Thor thrust the damaged Mjolnir into the Flame of Scirorrak where it is made whole once again. Everyone cheers though Odin is startled that for a moment something seemed wrong. And then Marnot arrives and insults Odin; Thor explains Marnot who continues to mock the All-Father before transforming into his real form of Hescamar, one of Odin’s faithful ravens. The bird explains that he was the repository of all the hidden knowledge of the Dark Gods and the contingency plans should they ever return, plans that were hidden even from Odin. Hescamar’s job was to hunt down every Asgardian not captured by the Dark Gods and conceal them. This was the main reason why Marnot had Thor assume the identity of Jake Olson and not as a point of honor. Thor is angry at being deceived thus and prepares to leave but the Destroyer steps forward and asks for his original body back. Odin uses his scepter to extract Preston Case’s life force (with gratitude toward Case for his help in the battle) and gives it to Thor to take to Midgard….

Thor arrives at the hospital where Jane Foster sits beside the comatose Preston Case, thinking he is not far from death. Thor restores Case’s life force to his body and he is revived, as good as new, to Jane’s surprise. Case has no memory of being the Destroyer. Jane reminds Thor of Jake Olson and his importance to the Fairmounts, asking if Thor is going to ruin their lives too. Thor departs…

...returning to Asgard where a huge feast is taking place. Odin reminds him that his pact with Marnot is needed no longer. But Thor still feels he owes a debt to Jake Olson whom he killed and intends to fulfill his commitment. The party continues….

Epilogue: Police Lt. Brady O’Neil and some uniformed officers have a search warrant and enter Jake Olson’s apartment. After a search, the missing drugs from the hospital are found hidden in the toilet tank. O’Neil puts out a warrant for Jake’s arrest....

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #13 Review by (July 16, 2025)

Review: Much of the issue just closes out the Dark Gods arc, with a lot of celebrating. Two things are added: 1) Marnot’s identity and purpose are revealed. Surprise: he’s an insolent raven who turned Thor into Jake Olson. Well, that’s a relief and we’re not going to see Marnot again, just Hescamar the raven who can get away with mocking Odin. 2) More trouble for Jake Olson as the cops are now after him. More on this next time. The scenes of rejoicing in Asgard are the outstanding part of the issue and provide a bit of relaxation before we return to the crisis next time.

Comments: Thor summarizes issues #1-2 to explain Marnot. Detective Brady O’Neil was introduced in issue #1; he will show up frequently until issue #20. Sole appearance of the Flame of Scirorrak. Coloring duties shared among Kevin Somers, Paul Tutrone, and Mark Bernardo. The lettering is split between Richard Starkings, Comicraft, and Wes Abbott. The letters page includes one by future comics writer Scott W. Myers.
