At the hospital, Jane Foster is seeing to the discharge of Colonel Preston Case after his troublesome encounter with the Destroyer. Iron Man was aiding Thor in collecting fragments of the Rainbow Bridge which were scattered around Earth; they have a large chunk and Sub-Mariner arrives giving them the last remaining piece which was on the ocean floor. Thor and Shellhead return the pieces to Asgard where Heimdall warmly welcomes Thor’s return. Iron Man sees the Asgardians busily repairing and restoring the damaged realm by hand, Volstagg suggesting that Iron Man can join in by fetching them food and drink. He declines. Odin is leading a motley group of beings whom he has freed from their captivity by the Dark Gods and transports them home, even their enemies, to restore the natural order. Orikal appears in the flame and warns Thor that forces beyond his ken are conspiring against him. Thor and Iron Man return to Earth….

To Thor’s surprise they appear in Midtown where Absorbing Man and Titania are causing a ruckus. A police officer explains that Creel and Titania entered a jewelry store to buy an anniversary present for her and the jeweler panicked and set off the alarm and everything escalated from there. Thor begins slugging it out with Creel while Iron Man (literally) tackles Titania. Thor hurls Mjolnir to break a large piece of rubble Creel is using as a weapon but the hammer does not return to its master, instead embedding itself in an alley wall. As sixty seconds count down, Thor is desperate to regain his hammer but he must intervene to protect Iron Man from Creel. As the unwanted transformation begins, Thor dashes into the alley, becomes Jake Olson and tries to extract the hammer from the wall. But a voice comes from Mjolnir, calling him an accessory to Odin’s murder of Forsung, and threatening Thor. Enrakt of the Enchanters appears before Jake vowing destruction of Odin. Jake also deduces that Enrakt is responsible for Mjolnir’s erratic behavior since issue #5. Enrakt induces a heart attack in Jake and returns to the hammer. Iron Man comes looking for Thor and discovers Jake so he flies him directly to the hospital.

Thor’s life passes before his eyes and he comes face-to-face with Jake Olson who tries to speak but Thor cannot hear him. Jane is able to restore Jake’s heartbeat but then Police Lt. Brady O’Neil arrives to place Jake under arrest….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #14 Review by (July 23, 2025)

Review: Okay issue mainly adds more complications to the new story arc. It is marred by a new artist’s odd design of Iron Man’s helmet but not to worry, the rest of the art is top notch, especially the revelation of Enrakt. The battle with the Absorbing Man is not going to appear on his greatest hits album as he and Titania are merely a pretext to put Jake Olson in danger and they do not return next issue—and neither does Iron Man. Looks like the bulk of the issue was window dressing. And Shellhead’s main job was to narrate flashbacks.

Comments: Part one of seven parts. Story title is a pun on the catchphrase of then popular singer M.C. Hammer. Enrakt first appeared in issue #5, possessing Mjolnir; this is his first full appearance; he will be in every issue up to #20. The Enchanters first appeared in THOR (Vol. 1) #143. Orikal (i.e. Oracle) first appeared in THOR (Vol. 1) #138-139 then in #9 of the present series. The lettering is split between Richard Starkings, Comicraft, and Wes Abbott.
