Incredible Hulk #7 Review by (December 20, 2023)

Review: A vintage WW2 Ghost Rider faces Hulk as does that weird thing we saw last issue and the result is satisfying. But now Hulk is infected by black sludge (or the Pokémon called Muk), setting up something even worse next time. So far this comic has been a nice blend of horror and action with an occasional moment of obtuse plotting, but it usually works itself out in the end.

Comments: Issue includes a tribute to production leader Alison Gill on her retirement after 40 years in the comics industry, including 24 years at DC; a drawing by Alan Davis portrays her with several characters she was associated with.

Incredible Hulk #7 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In the migrant worker camp, Hulk comes under fire from the new Ghost Rider who has detected a threat and trying to protect the little boy Leo. And the real monster, Dagaal, watches from close by. Charlie begs the kid to stop GR but the boy doesn’t control the undead vigilante. Then she points out that since Hulk isn’t the danger, there is a more immediate threat at hand. Then Dagaal is spotted and the workers go for their rifles. Hulk smashes Ghost Rider’s flaming motorcycle but it reassembles itself—then they hear the gunfire. Dagaal attacks a man but Charlie hits at it with a tire iron; it turns on her but GR grabs it by the head and drags it several yards away. Hulk demands of it to know where to find Eldest; Dagaal attacks Hulk so he seizes the monster and smashes it into the ground then he tosses the monster’s masklike head to Ghost Rider and warns him not to shoot at him (Hulk) again. Charlie tells GR that his Harley is bad@$$; GR asks for a cigarette but she doesn’t have any—and then he vanishes, his bike returning to its spot in the yard….

The following evening, at a meeting of local veterans, the old soldiers sit around, reminiscing about Harold, who died of a stroke. [Harold was the guy possessed by the Dagaal we saw last issue.] And we learn that they are all possessed by a black sludge-like creature and it is angry that humans killed Harold and not it so it will be seeking revenge as a horse-like form rises from the sludge….

Hulk and Charlie are sitting around the campfire with the residents of the migrant camp. Charlie says this is how she had always pictured going on adventures with a hero (specifically Captain America) and asks Hulk if they can stay. Hulk says no and she mimics him—and he imagines crushing her into a pulp and it surprises him. Charlie asks about Banner and Hulk imagines him locked away inside a monster’s skeleton. Then others notice Hulk’s eyes are going black. He orders everyone to run before striking out at the campfire. Charlie realizes he has been infected by the monster he fought earlier. And then a band of demonic warriors arrive on horseback—the War Devil has come back….
