New Avengers (2010 series) #20 cover

Story Name:

The New Avengers versus the new Dark Avengers

Synopsis

New Avengers (2010 series) #20 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Last issue ended with the New Avengers going to deal with a problem in Miami, but when they got there Norman Osborn's new Dark Avengers had already dealt with the invading Atlantean(?) monsters. But Jessica Jones decided not to go with them and instead remained with her daughter Danielle Cage who Osborn had threatened to kill.

Now this issue begins with a replay of the scene where Danielle's nanny Squirrel Girl says she can go because she'll look after her, and Jess says no. But now it continues with her asking Doreen Green to do her a favour and then she won't be needed as nanny anymore.

Luke Cage declares Osborn under arrest but Norman disputes his authority. Cage jumps from their Minicarrier and the others follow. Pitched battle ensues between New and Dark Avengers but Luke just wades through the foe to get to their boss who threatened his kid. But he's surprised when Osborn easily stops his fist with with his hand and then casually throws him a long way into the Ocean. Meanwhile Wolverine (Logan) and Dark Wolverine (Gorgon) clash claws while Ms Marvel (Carol Danvers) and Superia in an older MsM costume meet in midair. Logan tells Mockingbird to take the Minicarrier to retrieve Luke. But Skaar (son of Hulk) floors him with a punch and DW's on him again, except Spider-Man (in his white FF costume) leaps in to save him. Osborn orders his Ms Marvel to bring the Avengers' craft down but she's having a strangely difficult time against Daredevil. When she gets away Iron Fist pits his power against Skaar, and the recoiling 'Hulk' lands on Ai Apaec the 6-armed Spider-Man (who the real Spidey never met during Spider-Island: Deadly Hands Of Kung-Fu but probably wouldn't recognise him in his new guise anyway).

Dr Strange casts a spell against Scarlet Witch (June Covington) but she responds with her toxic breath. DD throws a billy-club to distract her and tells Spidey to get DrS to safety. His radar sense allows him to dodge 3 arrows from Hawkeye (Barney Barton). 2 of them hit DW while the other bounces off Skaar as our MsM fights Apaec in the background. SM kicks SW in the face and webs her mouth shut before helping paralysed Strange. They see the Minicarrier coming back and think it a good sign ... until it crashes courtesy of Superia.

DD and IF try to help injured civilians who blame *them*, because Osborn's group had everything under control until *they* started a fight. DrS has partially recovered and suggests this was a setup and Victoria Hand (last issue) gave the DAv a head start by sending the NAv to the wrong place initially.  But now Cage wades ashore and punches out Superia. Skaar gets between him and Osborn. But then a tidal wave appears to engulf Miami ...

... but it was an illusion cast by DrS and in the confusion he teleports the team to a nearby rooftop. The setup theory gains credence. But then Thor appears to menace them.

New Avengers (2010 series) #20 Review by (August 16, 2025)
Another cover with Spider-Man in the wrong costume. Plus it has Jessica Jones in the fight when she very specifically isn't.

The Thor at the end is his clone Ragnarok who we saw AIM working on in #18.
