Captain America (1968 series) #134

Review: And so one of the earliest series to feature street-level heroes addressing concerns of ordinary citizens debuts with a shift of emphasis on a long-running series. Yes, Captain America, super-soldier created to fight Nazis in World War Two, has been reassigned to taking down drug dealers and protection rackets in Harlem, assisted by the Falcon, whose neighborhood it is. Which sounds more like Cap is assisting Sam which inference would be fine with Marvel. The comic now takes on the tone of a Public Service Announcement, warning the population (of comic book readers) about the dangers they might face in life. That’s not meant in a bad way, it shows responsibility on the part of the comics publishers and if some readers react with sarcasm, that’s up to them. The series is rather well done and the heroes’ assault on the villain’s lair is a pretty exciting sequence. Me, I want some more of Captain America and the Falcon…oh hey! There are 88 more issues of this coming up!

Comments: Book retitled CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE FALCON with this issue; the title will remain through issue #222. First appearance of Stone-Face (later spelled Stone Face and Stoneface); he returns in #137. First appearance of Sam’s sister Jody Wilson-Casper; her next appearance is in issue #272, eleven years later; guess the family isn’t close. Her son Jody also debuts here but he will be back in #138.
